Former tech journalist of 20+ years - still dealing with that trauma in therapy, here now for the shitposts and wry observations on life, mostly NSFW. Definitely not for minors, of interest to miners, or relevant to mynahs either.

I’m not saying I could do better if I were on the team (I’m sure I could not). But handling that peak load isn’t the only way they could address the problem. How many people were out there repeatedly force quitting and reloading the store app because they weren’t sure if it would automatically close the splash screen once everything was ready? Why do countries with different iPhone SKUs need simultaneous preorders? etc

nostr:npub1qw54rqswdc57yswxwst3n7dcsv2ssg3rjr5zevx62p9aqxn8k8mqjm037m I find it amusing when people hitting Apple with a DDoS attack complain that Apple’s site is broken while they are breaking it.

nostr:npub1qw54rqswdc57yswxwst3n7dcsv2ssg3rjr5zevx62p9aqxn8k8mqjm037m Nobody forced them to commit to one specific time globally, knowing the peak load that would generate. They shouldn’t make promises they know they won’t be able to keep, especially not to people who then had to stay awake for nearly an hour in the middle of the night as a result.

nostr:npub12w9pl0tws0a2wure0qxnh9vts5jvamvjacv6ehmr9nruqltcjtdqdfskv4 you're right, of course. Apple should move heaven and earth to cater to tech nerds' FOMO.

If y'all think you're gonna get rid of your Lightning cables any time soon, just FYI: I spent a day and change a little bit ago scouring my house for a 30-pin Dock Connector cable to hook up an old Apple device I needed to backup and wipe.

Apple hasn't made a Dock Connector equipped device in more than a decade.

nostr:npub1rmkge3x0g7kruefryruuv03g2f8gfzpkzzq08qwjey4elmahjy3s5mvmcx As is often the case, this isn't going to boil down to who has the best tech, but who can get the most folks to use it.

I'm sure Apple's got plenty of runway with its silicon and Metal. But getting developers to use it instead of - or parallel with - DXR and Nvidia DLSS, AMD FRS and Vulkan is a different story.

nostr:npub1qw54rqswdc57yswxwst3n7dcsv2ssg3rjr5zevx62p9aqxn8k8mqjm037m ”just throw more servers/bandwidth at the problem." is also the scourge of modern computing, being the least thought out and most lazy approach to darn near everything.

I have worked with far too modern systems built with this approach, and the common factor is that they suck like a NASA vacuum cleaner.

nostr:npub1m83lwfyef7dv6nqstpykt263ezva5f2rylktmk9hzkllz78z5shqkng9se it's insidious too - huge web sites that don't have to be, huge apps that don't need to be.

I remain convinced that when Abe Lincoln said, "a government of the people, by the people, for the people," he didn't consider just how awful some of those people are.

Any bets on what surprises lay in store for today's #AppleEvent?

Yesterday I found myself at the "watch dogs do 100 yard sprints" stage of my broken leg recovery.

Made the mistake of firing up "War of the Worlds: The Attack" on Hulu yesterday. How this miserable student film project ended up on a major streaming service is beyond my ken. Absolutely shameful.

Some folks are aghast that Trump's political prospects appear undaunted by the four indictments, but I'm reminded that even the day he left office in shame and disgrace, one in four Americans still thought Richard M Nixon was doing a good job.

I would have been more upset with Zoom about this if 99.95% of Zoom calls weren't complete wastes of time anyway. Train away on my trash, IDGAF

Even in states like Massachusetts with a very effective health safety network that's been a model for the nation, navigating the vagaries of medical insurance networks and medical service providers - who covers what and who takes what - is an absolute fucking travesty.
