The fire that once burned bright in me
has flickered out,
The smoke lingering in my chest.
My eyes still echo a flame,
but it’s faint and blue—
a whisper of what it used to be.
How do I ignite myself alive again,
when every match I hold
burns out too soon?
I keep reaching for warmth
in the very things that hurt me,
pressing my hands to the embers,
hoping pain might spark me
back into flame.

The year is 2010. My mom has just finished getting ready. A black dress, hair blown out, high heels clicking softly against the floor. I watch her beauty ritual closely, memorizing each product and where it goes. The final step was always perfume.
My nose still remembers the smell vividly: an aquatic, aromatic musk with violets and traces of incense dancing in the background.
She was called Halloween.
