The best part of my fiat job definitely isn’t the money💸. It is 💯 the opportunity to connect with others at the level of our base humanity, to hear their life stories and experience. Today, I met a man (72) who at 17 had aspirations to be a nuclear physicist. His work study at CU was to clean the ‘hot areas’ at Rocky flats. By the age of 24 he was so sick (loosing 30% lung capacity) and had so much scarring on his lungs he had to be placed on an oxygen machine (he has used it ever since). He was unable to continue with his aspirations as a nuclear physicist. He had previously been a champion wrestler, and went on to teach physical education. There were 30 young men who were tasked with this work. Few if any are alive today.
I’ve researched and read a lot about Rocky Flats, but until today have never had the opportunity to speak with someone who actually worked there in the early years. (many of those who did have already passed-stories unheard).
I am grateful to have met This gentle man, to hear is story and appreciation for life and the simple beauty he enjoys despite a lifetime of illness.
Politicians who have forgotten these individuals, and who perpetuate war are not on the side of humanity.
