Absent an agreement on the #seabed being the common heritage of humankind, the UN mandated International Seabed Authority (ISA) has been licensing #deepseamining projects in international waters; #China has the most successful applications

Guy Standing (FT) thinks 'there is a distinct risk that we could see what would amount to the biggest resource grab in history'!

Some have argued for a moratorium on #ecological grounds, but the #mining lobby citing the #GreenTransition is gaining ground!

The consequences of the #Tories defunding of the #NHS in one simple chart.... In 2010 (when the coalition started) waiting lists for #hospital treatment in England was around 2.25mn.... now, thirteen years later, over 7mn people are on the waiting list(s).

This is the #NHScrisis in one number!

The #NHS is not safe in #Tory hands.

What's gong on at #Deliveroo?

After an Initial Public Offering which raised £1bn they're still burning through cash at a rate of over £50mn a year.... they're losing money on operations; but in the previous 2 years they burnt through nearly £250mn.

Now, they are offering to return some of the money raised to #shareholders (or as FT Lex puts it, offering investors their deposits back).

So, is this a sign Deliveroo is now sacrificing growth for profitability - they've reached an optimum size?

Yes, I think that's a really key point, not only is it a lack of leadership its actually antagonistic to others taking measures on their own.... when the Govt. make such a big move in the opposite direction (whatever the pious words about being part of a #netzero 'strategy') why would anyone take small scale (perhaps costly) actions which will be actually negated & outweighed by public policy.... #climatemadness!

Already this is the emerging theme of responses... which I think is fair - clear & helpful guidance is what the BCC are calling for & which while seeming a no-brainer, looks beyond the current shambles of Govt. in the UK

I would see that as not an either/or option - a #climate enlightened Govt. would do both.... if only we had such a Govt., or the prospects of one

Yes, and having (as you hint) the same problems with capacity & over-crowding....

You'll be unsurprised to learn that UK #households are worse off that their US equivalents... and that much of the difference lies in #housing costs & the continuing problem(s) with #productivity in the UK.

Perhaps (a little more interestingly), one thing that stops the wealth gap between US & UK growing is expense of #healthcare in the US & their dire #publicservcies (although here the UK is trying to catch up).

More evidence of UK's continuing decline into poverty

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/aug/09/housing-costs-making-uk-households-much-poorer-than-us-peers-study-finds

New data on vulnerability to #climatechange suggests #healthcare facilities in the South (London especially) are in danger of difficulties due to 'overheating'.

The #NHS crisis will likely be compounded in UK's S/SE/SW by a lack of investment in health #infratructure to deal with a changing climate.

Might the most efficient way to address this issue be to invest in expanding facilties in the N/NE/NW to allow for people to undertake procedures in the North?

A positive health tourism?

We'lll never reach #netzero without #businesses shifting activities in relation to #climatechange.

A British Chambers of Commerce survey suggests 60% of SMEs had no intention of reaching net zero, did not think it was possible for them to do so or didn't know what it involved;

Without their buy-in we'll never make it;

so the Govt. the BCC suggests needs to be a lot clearer on what is needed & ratchet up support to achieve it!

But the #Tories are moving away from #green policies instead!

Q. is the latest 'surge' in #gas prices a further short period of volatility or the shift back to higher prices driven by storage & #supplychain issues in the #energy sector?

Its always difficult reading short-term changes (especially across the last couple of month of volatile prices), but equally if prices are about to head up #GrantShapps may be looking at (another) UTurn on #energyprices support in the Autumn.

Time & prices will tell.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) latest survey of their membership reveals expectations that #houseprices will fall at the same time that #rents will rise as competition for #housing moves from buying to renting as #mortgage rates stay high(er).

the #housingcrisis is hurting this who are worse off, who cannot afford to buy but need to either relocate for #work or other reasons...

Even if building houses is (part of) the answer, more immediate relief is required, urgently!

Yes, #TimeTeam could be easily amended, surely - this week the archeologist whose find most wowed the judges (smiley face), while (sad face) it falls to me to say which of you will now be buried for posterity....

Now the #UnitedNations wants a bigger role on the reform go global #taxation, and in doing so is setting itself up against the #OECD which jealously guards this aspect of its international norm setting function...

That said, in many ways the UN looks like a more sensible place for global tax reform to be formulated, until you think about the difficulties the organisation has in driving forward other changes.

Nevertheless a UN Tax Programme (UNTP) might build on (much) earlier work by UNCTAD!

As Southern #Europe burns, Tui have already started the process of pivoting to cooler countries, including #Belgium, which while having many admirable qualities as a (cultural) #holiday destination, might struggle with some aspects of the beach holiday model.

However, overall the travel business is claiming its pretty much all back to normal after the shock of #Rhodes in flames.... in the medium term that might begin to look a little optimistic?

OMG, would have been more fun with 'civilians' though..... 'I've always fancied waving a stick around, and thought I'd give it a go....'

yes we were laughing this evening about the possibility of heart transplant version... each week a surgeon is knocked out after performing worse on a less vital op, before winning the chance to do a transplant on the 'civilian' judge 😀
