Agreed; its very much scorched earth... leaving so much for the next Govt. to do that they can but fail, opening up an opportunity for the right-wing to exploit such 'failure' & all the #Tories to return as 'saviours' (but only to those with a shirt memory)

The #Tories plan to wreck the #healthservcie is compounded by its attacks on the #universities, leaving the #NHS workforce strategy struggling to get going, due to both a lack of applicants, who (strangely) are put off by the Govt.'s attitude(s) to NHS #workers, alongside a lack of staff to teach them as universities themselves suffer their own problems.

Saving the NHS will require more than just saving the NHS - we need a comprehensive re-valuing of the #publicsector

Those on the 'moderate' wing of the #Tory party who worry that #LeeAnderson may be reviving the party's reputation as the 'nasty party', really haven't been paying attention (perhaps wilfully?);

the language may be more moderate but the key underlying message of the post-2010 #tories has been hatred & spitefulness;

the only thing different about #30pLee is that he's not adopting the politeness of the Gentlemen's Club to hide his toxic social attitudes.

How much of a threat to #democracy is #artificialintelligence - we may well find out (to our cost) next year if John Naughton's (well-founded) expectations come to pass.

But, hey the #TechBros want to have some #regulation... all a but like closing the stable door after your (AI-driven) horse has bolted, methinks

Looking at this list of the benefits of (continued) membership of the European Convention on Human Rights, its perhaps not so hard to see what the swivel-eyed, right-wing nut-job tendency have against it....

When you're conducting a #classwar, pushing a #racist agenda on #imigration, or just trying to curtail popular criticisms of what you are doing for you (political) chums, these are all a but too inconvenient!

Sylvia Sleigh's white male ‘Harem’ #painting titled 'The Turkish Bath' (1973) included her husband.

As a direct critique/response to Ingres' work of the same name (which included a naked portrait of his young wife), its right on the #feminist point...

Sleigh herself remains one of a number of female #artists who have been often been ignored by a male-oriented #arthistory

a promised new monograph (as yet still delayed) may well put the record straight!

Yes, #TateModern looks like the better contemporary example of a #tourism benefit while also fulfilling a national cultural need

I have come to the conclusion that often (now) I'm only reading the news to allow me to write toots on #mastodon...

Does this make be a bad/uncaring person?

If you wondered how #hippy #capitalists view #workers, the news that #SanFrancisco is the first #city in the world to allow driverless #taxis to operate on its streets, tells you what you need to know.

The #TechBro capital of the world is trying to put ordinary folk out of work...

Johnny Rotten once said: 'never trust a hippy'... yup, that's about it!

The #Biden administration has offered over $billion to Occidental Petroleum to develop #DirectAirCapture in the latest wheeze by #fossilfuel firms to draw down cash to develop of #carboncapture as a response to the #ClimateCrisis;

So far 30 DAC plants have been commissioned with only six being actually built (so far) & as this is an early-stage relatively un-tested #technology, one cannot help but think its another way for #oil companies to keep their main game going for a few more years!

I think it'll be more about the character of the capacity... and the 'retirement' of older vessels shifting the available shipping

but the data is incomplete & opaque at times... so will be one to watch

Meanwhile in the global #supplychain:

There are 40% less large shipyards that a decade ago, and most are focussed on #container ships & LNG tankers, leaving total merchant shipping tonnage forecast to only rise by 2% next year, slower than for two decades.

What we may be about to encounter is a shortage of capacity for the bulk carriers that transport #food around the global system... if so, we can expect further food #inflation & shortages given the UK's required food imports!

Q.: is the #CrookedHouse saga yet on more metaphor for thirteen years of #Tory rule?

[I think you know what I'd say]

Rightly the #TUC suggests a 'modest' and clearly focussed #wealthtax would give a significant fiscal boost to #publicservices... we need to (re?)establish fairness in #taxation in the UK as a way of rebuilding society both financially and morally....

The TUC have as yet not 'recommended' this change, but the very act of pointing out what it would entail ratchets up the pressure on the Labour Party to be thinking about such things!

As this weekend's #doctors #strike enters is 2nd day, you will be unsurprised that the issue is essentially what counts as a 'credible offer' on pay & conditions; #RishiSunak & #SteveBarclay think what they have offered is 'credible', the #BMA (and doctors) don't agree.

If I'm asked to choose between the #Tories & #healthcare professionals' view of what is 'credible' in the #NHS, you'll forgive me if I dismiss the Tory position, based on their engineering of the #NHS crisis in the first place!

I guess the Q, is: is reminding a jury of the rights it has, a case of guidance & direction?

But I'm sure you're right this will be the angle being taken by the Soliciter General

Yes, I agree & spent a couple of years in the early 1990s working to these ends with #Charter88... whose agenda for reform remains as timely now as it was thirty years ago

nostr:npub17tzfqn39qc9p7qd82cd8pfql2pdzy93ksajhl0066su4c83l4nqq6aaxp5 are helping #TrudiWarner defend herself against a charge of 'contempt of court' for holding up a placard that 'reminded' jurors of a rights established in law in 1670.

the placard read: 'Jurors: you have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience'!

We seem to live in a society where even stating the law is regarded as a contempt if it does not follow the Govt's preferred narrative on how the #ruleoflaw works

Authoritarianism?

They marched them on.... and then they marched them off.

beset by legal issues, nevertheless the #HomeOffice managed to get 39 #migrants onto the #BibbyStockholm ... only to find legionella bacteria on the water system, leading to an immediate evacuation of the barge.

In some ways this is a metaphor for so much #Tory policy; what looked like an easy fix has proved, on contact with reality, to not be so....
