Great memories of buying an import copy of the first #JungleBrothers & grooving to this hip-hop mash up with #MarvinGaye...

This really was when hip hop was the CNN for #AfricanAmericans in ChuckD' phrase.

different grid - the canal(s) were once one of England's key infrastructure networks - but yes, now essentially off grid at 4mph... lovely

Well, they're well marketed, but also, perhaps more insidiously, the right wing papers shape the broadcast media's news agenda in a way that the smaller sector of centre & left papers don't always manage - thus the right wing media's influence goes well beyond their direct readership.

Definitely; it all about a lack of trust... but also reveals much about how #managers think about their own human behaviour....

I'm not sure I'd give in to the temptation to return from 'off grid' if i'd managed to get there in the first place...

yes, I vaguely know Duncan from my academic years & read this (and have seen him talk on it)... good (if depressing) stuff

also would enable nomadic lifestyles to be communicated in a physic geography?

Again an interesting thought; measure the lack of (or lessening of) specific bass would be a really interesting way to go... we sometimes see a shadow of this approach but not i the structured way you're suggesting - great idea, thanks

yes a public balance sheet, revisited each Q. would be interesting... what would be your measure for the public good aspect?

I think one answer would be the power of the right-wing press to structure the agenda of politics in the UK, which has served the #Tories well over the last 75 years

UK's second Q 'growth' in #GDP = 0.2% - while allowing the UK to continue to avoid a 'technical' #recession, for those thinking growth is the answer, things look pretty grim....

Whether this is the right measure for #economic 'success' is fo course another matter - here is something I wrote in response to earlier Q. announcement of GDP figures - really we might be better advised to think differently about our economic plight....

As #Wlico plunges into administration, and the family owners decline to express an interest in bidding for the firm themselves, my guess is attention is likely to turn to the amount of dividends the most recent generation of Wilkinsons extracted from the business in the last decade(s).

I wouldn't be surprised if it transpired that while #inflation & #supplychain issues contributed to the chain's demise, the extraction of capital will be seen to have played a major role in scuppering the firm!

John Burn-Murdoch (FT) on the regional authoritarianism of #London:

'Its capital is the one thing keeping the UK hanging on in the upper economic echelons, but the decades-long London-centricism of everything from finance & culture to politics has engendered a reluctance to allow any other part of the country to be an agent in its own destiny in the way that London has been'.

As an ex-Londoner now living in the NW, the corrosive London-centrism of the UK only became clear when I moved out!

If you wanted a demonstration that most #managers are more interested in power-over, rather than power-to.... look at the increasing pressure to get staff back to working in the office not #workingfromhome.

Despite good data for many occupations that #WFH is more effective & efficient than being in the office, managers are putting more pressure on staff to work three or more days a week in the office.

They are more interested in power over #workers than power to increase business efficacy!

Agreed, its a world-historical race against time; the world is trying to rid itself of a parasite while we continue to find new aspects of the world to destroy... but in the end, but its very nature, the world will win, as it can outlast #humans ability to survive the consequences of our actions...
