According to Iraqi government officials, Iraq right now is continuing to import natural gas from Iran despite the expiration today of an energy waiver provided by the United States, adding that they are working on alternative plans in case the gas supply is fully cut-off by Iran due to non-payment. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity states that they are attempting to obtain another 120-day or longer waiver from the United States, which would allow them to continue purchasing natural gas and other energy imports from Iran that they are dependent on, though they are prepared in case no extension is given; with it expected that the U.S. under the Trump Administration will not grant an extension, as U.S. President Trump has called for a “Campaign of Maximum Pressure” on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been notified by the Trump Administration to prepare to lose another 1,000 staff in the next month, in addition to the roughly 1,300 that resigned and were laid off in recent weeks, representing a 20% reduction in its nearly 13,000 workforce. Managers at NOAA have been told to draw up proposals for layoffs and reorganization by Tuesday, which many scientists are warning will severely limit operations at NOAA agencies critical to national security like the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Hurricane Center (NHC), who have already lost hundreds of meteorologists and forecasters since January, a worrying prospect as Atlantic Hurricane Season approaches for the Southeastern United States.

North Korea today unveiled what is believed to be their first ever nuclear-powered strategic guided-missile submarine, under construction at an “undisclosed” shipyard alongside several other semi-modern to modern naval vessels. Moon Keun-sik, a South Korean submarine expert, said that the vessel appeared to be a 6,000-ton-class or 7,000-ton-class submarine which can carry about 10 missiles, stating that the term “strategic guided-missile” suggested that it would carry nuclear-capable ballistic missiles. Despite North Korea possessing an aging fleet of roughly 70 diesel-powered submarines, it is not known how such a heavily sanctioned country could have obtained a nuclear reactor, though it is believed it was likely provided or they had assistance from Russia, possibly in exchange for them recently joining Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The prosecutor’s office declined to appeal the release order on the grounds that said order might have been unconstitutional due to the court’s ruling. While president Yoon previously relinquished his presidential powers, he has voiced a desire to still have a say in South Korea’s foreign policy outlook going forward.
