the co-op does replace the NPC party roles but if you don't have a full party of four, you can take your favourite ones to fill the gaps!
Otherwise just like the single player campaign you can always gather everyone at your camp and talk to them there instead.
I guess you do miss some of the game, but I feel as if it's so expansive a second or third play through solo wouldn't be a bad thing.
(Our group always takes breaks so they can talk to their virtual crush before long rest)
