罗翔老师一再强调，他认为哲学就是生活方式，读哲学或许让我们可以思考自己生活方式，可以选择自己的生活方式。
这章开始，阿德曼图斯认为如果护卫者不能拥有自己的财产，无法享受荣华富贵，那就是最不幸福的人。
对于这个疑问，苏格拉底让他定义：什么是幸福？
小阿同学解释说：心情愉悦，内心自然发出。苏格拉底继续追问，什么叫“心情愉悦”，什么叫“内心自然发出”？你所说的每句话，是出于感觉，还是深思熟虑的术语？
苏格拉底认为，护卫者过着上面描述的生活是幸福的。因为建立这个国家的目标，并不是为了某一个阶级单独突出的幸福，而是为了全体公民的最大幸福。这样的国家才能找到正义。给护卫者那种大家认为的幸福，那他们就不能称其为“护卫者”。
他用颜色举了一个例子，表明个体美还是整体美？紫色是最尊贵的颜色，但全身都是紫色并不好看。只有各种颜色搭配恰当才是最美的。所以不能把护卫者割裂成单独的个体，而要把他们作为整体放入国家里来考察。
（这段解释很难理解，柏拉图理解的幸福不是普通意义的那种幸福，他之前说过的神话，“普天之下皆兄弟，金银铜铁各安天命”。各人各司其职就是理想国家，就是最大的幸福。）
苏格拉底继续论述，有两个原因会让人的技艺退化。一个是“贫穷”，一个是“富裕”。富则奢侈、懒散和要求变革，贫穷则粗野、低劣也要求变革。所以不要有贫穷和富裕进入这个国家。
对于国家他认为一般的国家都存在富裕和贫穷两个，甚至是多个敌对群体，他们只是貌似一个国家，而自己的国家不存在这种状况，所以它不能太大，能恰好维持住统一才是最佳的。
然后继续重复教育环境的纯洁性的重要。法律则不需要太多的繁文缛节，因为坏的国家里有再多的法律也不能使其变得美好。我们建立的美好城邦只需要制定关于神的祭祀、崇拜，死者的殡葬仪式这些法律就行了。
这时，这个正义的国家就建立起来了。从这个国家里去寻找四种美德：智慧、勇敢、节制和正义。对它们逐一论述和定义。
（关于这四种美德，就算在今天也应该是我们所追求的。虽然距离很远，愿大家都能心向往之。）
