having spent way too much time digging through the countless AP projects, I can safely vouch that ActivityPub has a boatload more than just 4 devs, but - if I remember correctly - the original spec was written mostly by 4 people(?)

Right. But at the same time, there’s many many 3rd party Bluesky developers making tons of cool things. Some even based on ATProto and completely separate from Bluesky.

We have custom feeds - they can be coded, or there are 3rd party tools to make them, no coding required.

Your PDS (personal data server) can be hosted yourself, and you can migrate to it. This means if you post something ILLEGAL Bluesky will cut off access to THEIR AppView & Relays, but they can't remove your data entirely, which means you can bring your identity with you to another ATProto based app. Right now, we might not see many, but that's because Bluesky is building it out.

And the idea is, the web could be as it is now, with webapps, but you login with your ATProto identity, so from the normal user's perspective, nothing is different. In fact, it's an easier learning curve than Nostr is for most.

And for those calling it centralised, yes it is. It is centralised. But it's all open source, and Bluesky is building out the Protocol layer aswell as the Product (Bluesky itself). They are already in talks with standardising parts of the protocol, so that they don't own it anymore. The web can be the same, but your data comes with you. If Bluesky shuts down, some other app could reappear which uses the same data structure in your PDS to read/write posts. This means you can bring it around with you.

& you can host your entire own Relay for about $150/month OR for cheaper, you can run your own AppView built on top of Bluesky's official Relay.

auto-following on account creation is a mistake. especially for nostr clients. takes a bunch of agency away and puts the person in a defensive position of “why am i following this account?”

trending, search, and topics are far better leads to a follow.

I just gave a friend an update on what Nostr is and showed a bunch of apps in the ecosystem. Showing how fast it is and how all of these apps use the same identity and data but are different in their focus. He has been around the space of social media protocols for years but he was blown away.

We’ve really got something amazing. We need to do a better job of show and telling the story. It’s not about just zaps or censorship resistance or the way we’re doing web of trust moderation. We’ve built something which works really well. It fulfills the dream of the early days of the internet, web, and Web 2.0. An open interoperable internet, by and for the users.

As an aside, yes bitcoin is part of it, but it’s so politicalized that some people dismiss nostr as that bitcoin social media protocol. We see people join nostr and through it discover bitcoin, that’s the path to wide adoption.
