Information moves faster - but social media isn't the cause of that.. the speed of the Internet is..
Social media - when not federated - is a net negative - because one source controls what you see, hear and are exposed to.
When I used the Internet it was still called the ARPANet and was only available via college campuses etc.. And I would dial into a 'terminal server farm' to access the resources that were available (which other than mail and usenet newsgroups weren't much).
Times have changed.. we very much take for granted how fast information (and disinformation) flows now.. Which is why I think federating resources (again) is the right approach.. Google is a media company first - not a search or knowledge engine company. We need to take back the sharing of information and not let companies monopolize how we find information - we need to decide for ourselves what is valuable and accurate.
