It looks like ChatGPT is down and causing errors such as request timeouts. Now you need to use this little thing called brain old good Google 😉

wholesome yet dystopian 😅

Once upon a time, there was a project named "United Linux." It was an attempt by a consortium of Linux distributors to create a common base distribution for enterprise use to minimize duplication of engineering effort and form an effective competitor to Red Hat. The founding members of United Linux were SUSE, Turbolinux, Conectiva, and Caldera International (SCO Group). The consortium was announced on May 30, 2002. The end of the project was announced on January 22, 2004. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Linux

If you're not familiar, Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen is the CEO of SUSE at the moment. He previously worked at Red Hat as a Senior VP for 18 years. With his experience, he poses a credible threat to RHEL, so it's clear that the current CEO is not to be underestimated and he is serious about it.

For those who didn't follow the whole story or drama so far about Red Hat/IBM. Here we go:

1. Red hat blog that started storm https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/furthering-evolution-centos-stream

2. Oracle said they will set enterprise Linux free https://www.oracle.com/news/announcement/blog/keep-linux-open-and-free-2023-07-10/

3. SUSE announced RHEL fork https://www.suse.com/news/SUSE-Preserves-Choice-in-Enterprise-Linux/

4. More info from Rocky Linux https://rockylinux.org/news/keeping-open-source-open/

5. Also from Alma Linux https://almalinux.org/blog/our-value-is-our-values/

Growing hostile towards open source is a bad idea. The only party left to fork RHEL is Canonical (maybe the orignal founders of Red Hat, Bob Young, and Marc Ewing, also thinking to fork RHEL at this stage, lol).

nostr:npub1kldq5mzeyv7hsn2qmq47jmen4sgqcsujt6ey078uqw3dy77tqmeqnptnh5 No, they forked it. They will now maintain their own version without using patches from Red Hat/IBM. Probaly, Rocky and Alma may switch to one of new fork too. IDK. But it is a messy situation.

Somewhere in Austin, Texas, United States.

Larry: Wim, What is this sudden blog post about RHEL?

Wim: We are going to set Enterprise Linux free for all. We can't afford not to.

Larry: Are you sure about that?

Wim: Yes, Sir, We will have a field day with IBM now. We are unbreakable Linux.

Larry *mumble*: Wait, are we the good guys, now?

Moreover, there's a risk of accidental copyright infringement. Even big IT companies like Apple and others have stopped using ChatGPT tools. However, it's important to remember that this is not a competition. Having more tools means having better options for everyone. It would be best if you used what works best for you as long as your employer approves it. That's all. (2/2)

KID: Can you write code without ChatGPT?

Me: Certainly! In fact, many people, including myself, have written code without the assistance of the Internet. We relied on reading documentation & books. However, modern technology has made the process much simpler. It is just another tool to speed up the process. Like any other tool, it is flawed too. I must say that the code generated by ChatGPT seems low quality and has several security bugs. (1/2)

I don't know how they came up with that number. It's possible that it's not accurate. However, Linux users tend to be more vigilant about blocking tracking compared to users of other operating systems, so the actual number could be higher. For reference, on my blog, the numbers are (from server-side logs):

45% Windows

18% macOS

23% Linux

14% Rest (iOS, Android, FreeBSD, ChromeOS etc).

Yay! Finally we hit the mark: #Linux Desktop Market Share is at 3%. If you add ChromeOS, then it is above 7%. LOL. https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide
