Climate economist, Columbia https://gwagner.com It’s pronounced juggernaut without the jug.

Fake headshots, fake AI-generated posts, fake AI-generated "engagement."

Ah, progress.

Inflation stats are out. More telling: how much of inflation is indeed due to (largely fossil) energy prices fluctuating widely

One problem at a time

One of the most prominent arguments against rapid solar deployment: land!

Yes, there are tradeoffs. Of course, there are. That's especially true, say, if most of your land is confined to one big island, as in the #UK.

And yes, by calling out "golf courses" here we're squarely in "OMG culture war!" territory.

Still, the numbers couldn't be clearer.

During the early years of the pandemic hardly anyone flew anywhere. Carbon emissions fell. Now every other person in my FB feed is either overseas, going overseas or has been overseas at least once in the last year. If those people were conscious of their danger (covid & climate change eg Greece fires, floods) and understood trips kill their kids’ futures, there’d be less flying.

nostr:npub1t7kq09dm3cp4wxrylhf3yg9yh47tqvvwx6xsxfa62s3u4a56jefsrmnx82 True. Though, of course, the Covid-bounceback was eminently predictable.

"This year’s regional sales meeting in Cleveland might have been one of the “COVID casualties.” Next year’s? Barcelona or bust."

For the 1000th time, no, you don't "fly more sustainably" by planting a couple trees. And it's rather telling that 100% #SAF isn't even available as one of the main options.

Hate to tell ya, but a transatlantic flight with SAF costs at least ~€600 more than your regular ticket. Yes, SAFs should be mandated, now. And yeah that means more expensive plane tickets.

nostr:npub1728f8seslcw4yzpvlad7w55ax9tts6d477ng995zkrl8tu6m3fsqx8q433 May I ask what type of vehicle we're worried about here? Is it the dude on his e-bike dragging 5 family's worth of weekly groceries behind him? Or Amazon going all in on bike-lane-sized e-bike-type thingies? nostr:npub12hcukmhg84lr9r7pehtf24nt87cm76086pc0tp7vaz4glp6up79sfkf9al

Impassioned #NYC cyclist here, with 2 young kids scooting/biking everywhere. Yes, I wholeheartedly support this rule change to allow "pedal-assist commercial bicycle" onto bike lanes.

The key bit: actually enforce the rules, making sure that taxis & Ubers, delivery trucks, and, worst of all, private cars don't use bike lanes on a regular basis.

Solar #geoengineering gets the FT Big Read treatment, and oy, the battle lines are forming: "advocates" v "opponents"

106 now reported dead in #Maui fires, around 1300 still missing!

It's also an analogy for climate damages more broadly: whatever the Social Cost of Carbon is, it can only be a partial estimate.

Another advantage of the 15min city: first an outing to watch MI7 with the kids and their cousin, followed by a quick stop at nostr:npub10rqw25x3ztaydnk6qefd53nmw2e452sy9nm93nm8nryk3qec0jas8pr62j on the walk home, for a segment on the 1-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act and the global clean-energy race: https://finance.yahoo.com/video/inflation-reduction-act-outlook-bidens-212330957.html

Best part: coming home after to Games of Life and chess.

Equally fun: coming home and finding the kids playing with uncle & cousin

I just discovered Julie Lasky's Living Small column in the NYT, and I'm addicted. I just wished "Apartment Life" mag were still around https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/10/realestate/apartment-life-magazine-instagram-baby-boomer.html

How much less sprawl would there be — and much lower would CO₂ emissions be — if the #NYT Real Estate section actually celebrated living in…New York rather than trying to turn us all into square-foot maximizing 'burbanites?
