Unfortunately, Musk and Zuck have power to change—or wreck—the world, so rooting for their failure feels reckless to me. But anything that makes them feel cool or chic to anyone should be punished—severely.

The fact that this farce even got this far is why I’m often tempted to resign my commission to the human race. I feel like Admiral Stockdale: “Why am I here?”

nostr:npub1vdkesr9ecld329atnx70qxx53c7r9fp708hfaxg6mjw690yvfgvq3ptz44 But you seem miss my point. I’ve been here a long time, and never once heard anyone tell me I could control what I see and how I see it. Only that other people can’t do that for me. A very big difference.

The very first serious mention I ever heard of “personal algorithms” came from Bluesky, a competitive protocol arising from what competition is often said to do well. improving on what came before.

nostr:npub1vdkesr9ecld329atnx70qxx53c7r9fp708hfaxg6mjw690yvfgvq3ptz44 But it is a flaw to anyone who wants to see widespread adoption of a coherent global communications platform, not merely streaming ids and niche interests. Conflating the core need for algorithms that can weed out noise and weak signal, with big tech’s misuse of both isn’t helping us sell the fedi idea to anyone else. Insisting that it does resembles that holier-than-thou, Linux-rules! brand of herd orthodoxy that helps a better mousetrap remain a niche product.

You don’t get the world you want by devising some immaculate rhetorical strategy that appeals to people who think like you and agree with your premises. That was the Bernie method and it failed miserably. If you want to keep failing, keep trying to say “everything and everyone sucks.” I assure you, you will succeed.

nostr:npub1vdkesr9ecld329atnx70qxx53c7r9fp708hfaxg6mjw690yvfgvq3ptz44 We completely agree that the Masto focus was and remains a mistake. But it often doesn’t matter WHY things happen, except to academically interested. It matters that it did happen, and there is not much chance of changing perceptions by relying on same talking points that failed the first time. Declaring superiority over the only social media most ever knew didn’t work We need new approaches (and/or services) that better demonstrate and promote the alleged advantages

Reading those who insist that the fediverse and its future belong mostly to the pioneering demographic that helped to build it help me understand why so many conservatives always harken back to the “founding fathers.” There’s an illusion of authenticity created by predicating arguments on historical antecedence, despite having little if any relevance to our present reality. I am sure it’s one of many logical fallacies I can never remember the name of.

nostr:npub1vdkesr9ecld329atnx70qxx53c7r9fp708hfaxg6mjw690yvfgvq3ptz44 I strenuously disagree with that take. For years, even Mastodon’s founder constantly referred to it as an alternative to Shitter, and big media still can’t describe it. So perhaps the culture did a poor job of explaining itself? Which may explain why after getting the most prodigious explosion of earned media in the history of digital tech, it still enjoys an active user base that is little more than a rounding error in most social media stats.

This is an excellent brief description of our problems and our opportunity. Interesting that he chose the words ” open social media platforms” to describe the decentralized firmament, rather than “fediverse.”

nostr:npub1qmydlzkn99hurzp40m9mm6kk0at30quddhh79gal5jvwmh2ty75qpjuj5c That is often true, but there is a difference between asking “what’s your solution” as deflection, to an often futile attempt to shift focus from repetitive grievance mongering and performative caterwauling about problems that are sometimes centuries old, which mostly serve to fuel the discontent that typically benefits populists and authoritarians who derive most of their energy from it.

As the Twitter migrations fade, I wish we could discuss how we might evolve the fediverse as something less an alternative to big social, than a parallel social universe. One is useful for widely broadcasting ideas, news and opinion to millions, many of whom will have the IQ of a learning-disabled mollusk, while the other is better suited to discussing those same things. They are completely different ecosystems that can and should thrive independently of each other, but interoperate as needed.

Anyone that has ever had an internal hemorrhoid, knows precisely how to describe @mattgaetz.

I got sucked into watching the first three episodes of #Beef on Netflix. It's nice to see that a mostly Asian cast can make such unappealing characters, too. Does it get any better?

Well. nostr:npub1uzx5wnec43exxarpk62pn8ppnejzd5amh5pzgc3rp3vckjd3l58s854p49 and others in Atlanta who are following the court proceedings there are predicting (based on what we've seen with grand juries in Georgia) that we will see indictments on Tuesday.

Trump's rantings on social media about a witch hunt in Georgia for a perfect phone call would seem to confirm this.

Can anyone think of a similar instance of a single person indicted across multiple jurisdictions (New York, GA, South Florida, DC)?

Or is Trump the Winner of Indictments?

nostr:npub1jfqlmfxcg9dc49dzsqvlvml3kswsrmq4pkjgtgkjgmc9tgzm0wqsy22vsl Funny you mention that. I was just asking around for a hernia belt. You never know what cottagers have up on shelf next to the Trivial Pursuit games.

Youtube interfaces make me stabby. All of them.

Have you prepared yourself for a second Trump term? The more the media talks about it, the more likely it becomes.
