“We are living in great fear” – red. Media was on the ground with Delhi’s persecuted Rohingya Muslims, who fled a genocide in Myanmar. However, they now face a similar situation in India, as authorities under the Hindu-nationalist BJP party mirror oppressive actions by Myanmar’s military.

Genocidal attacks at the hands of the Myanmar military starting in August 2017 caused more than 770,000 Rohingyas to flee. At least 20,000 displaced Rohingyas live in India, facing growing anti-Muslim violence and living in constant fear of detention and even deportation back to Myanmar.

Living conditions in refugee camps are deplorable, lacking drinking water, sanitation facilities, and education. Children, in particular, bear the brunt of these conditions, experiencing malnutrition, chronic diseases, and alarmingly high rates of infant mortality.

On this day in 1804, Haiti declared its independence after a slave uprising turned into a revolution that crushed the French colonizers.

After kicking out the French the former colony was renamed "Haiti", the Indigenous Arawak name for the island, and would become the first Black republic in the world as well as the first nation in the Western Hemisphere that abolished slavery.

The independence of Haiti was a major blow to French colonialism and inspired revolutionaries around the world as one of the most successful slave revolutions in history.

The Zapatistas smashed the neo-liberal triumphalism of the 90s and reinvigorated a global left that was still in retreat following the fall of the Soviet Union. Using the name of the legendary Emiliano Zapata, Indigenous communities in Southern Mexico built a rebellion that foisted them into the history books and reminded a generation that another world is possible.

They built a movement that went beyond protest becoming a permanent movement that included everyone through the participatory democracy they practiced in their self-governing communities. As the old Zapatista slogan goes, "Here the people govern, and the government obeys".

red. Rewind 2023: In the summer of this year, the Mediterranean saw one of its worst-ever boat disasters, leaving over 500 migrants dead. On June 14, the fishing trawler Adriana was heading for Italy when it sank in the Ionian Sea off the Greek coast. The approximately 750 migrants onboard, mainly from Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, were crammed aboard the overcrowded vessel when it sank. Although 82 bodies were recovered, it is believed that hundreds of people drowned in the most horrific circumstances. There were only 104 survivors, and none of them were women and children. The infamous Greek Coast Guard and EU border protection agency Frontex were strongly criticized for their slow responses.

Following the tragedy, left-wing groups in Greece, including trade unions and the Communist Party, supported protests expressing solidarity with the migrants and opposing the controversial pushbacks and border fences used by the Greek government to deter migrants. Unsurprisingly, the protests were met with police violence.

By the time the shooting stopped a few hours later, there were bodies strewn everywhere including those of babies and women.

On this day 12 years ago, the Turkish military killed 34 Kurdish civilians, including 19 children, in the airstrikes known as the Roboski massacre.

On December 28, 2011, two F-16 Fighting Falcons of the Turkish Air Force bombed a caravan of border traders in the northern Kurdish populated city of Şırnak.

The majority of them were under 18, all civilians. Only four people survived the attack, but all sustained serious injuries.

No one has been held accountable for the incident. Massive protests across Turkey followed the attacks, but protesters faced police repression with batons and teargas.

Two relatives of the victims were imprisoned, and a total of 16 people from the village of Roboski were put on trial, accused of “attending a memorial service for their relatives.” However, they were acquitted, as the tribunal declared that no criminal offence had been committed.

Hundreds of Indonesian university students stormed a refugee shelter, forcefully evicting Rohingya refugees and demanding their immediate deportation. Footage showed Rohingya women and children being forced to sit on the ground in tears. At the same time, the mob trampled over their belongings and attempted to attack them. The students forced the 137 Rohingya refugees out of the temporary shelter and onto trucks ready to be deported.

The storming of the refugee shelter in the city of Banda Aceh marks just the latest incident in a string of attacks against the persecuted minority from Myanmar seeking refuge in Indonesia. The UN said that the attack was the result of a coordinated online campaign of misinformation and hate speech, as many residents claim the refugees take scarce resources and come into conflict with locals. More than 1,500 Rohingya refugees have arrived on the shores of Aceh since mid-November in what the UN says is their most significant influx in eight years.

Anti-Rohingya sentiment escalated in 2017 when the Muslim Rohingya population in Myanmar was the target of a genocide by the Myanmar military. The military killed more than 25,000 Rohingyas and forced over 700,000 to flee their homeland, with many seeking refuge in neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and India. With anti-Rohingya violence intensifying in those countries, many attempt deadly sea journeys to Malaysia and Indonesia, where they’re frequently met with the same discrimination.

As a result of ongoing persecution in Myanmar and anti-Rohingya sentiment growing across the region, many remain terrified and traumatized. The dire situation for the stateless Rohingya people leaves one to ask if they are the most persecuted minority in the world, as they are often described.

"It's not just the French who are our problems. It's the whole of NATO." - said one Nigerien in response to the withdrawal of the last French soldiers from the country, bringing France's decade-long military operation in the Sahel to an end. In the wake of this year's coup in Niger, which toppled President Mohamed Bazoum, a close ally of France, coup authorities ordered the withdrawal of 1,500 French troops from the country.

After months of tension, massive protests outside the foreign military bases, and France's pushing their regional partners to launch a military invasion against Niger, Paris withdrew its last troops. Since the coup against Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, the West has been provoking an inter-African war by pushing ECOWAS and Western-aligned countries to intervene militarily in Niger. The US still operates two military bases with 1100 soldiers in Niger.

Mao Zedong, the co-founder of the Communist Party of China, was born 130 years ago today in Shaoshan. In 1949, after 28 years of revolutionary struggle, Mao founded the People’s Republic of China, bringing the Communist Party of China to power in an extraordinary moment in Chinese, 20th-century, and revolutionary history. Born into a peasant family in the 19th century, he rose to lead China, transforming it from a poverty-stricken feudal nation into a socialist society.

Mao and others were concerned that a revisionist elite led by Deng Xiaoping had emerged within the party, seeking to re-establish capitalism in China. In 1966, he launched the Cultural Revolution to combat this capitalist-bourgeois ideology. Mao also distinctly distanced himself from the revisionist direction the Soviet Union took following the death of Stalin.

Following Mao’s death in 1976, emerging bourgeois elements within the party executed a coup d’état and reinstated capitalism under the direction of Deng Xiaoping and his successors, who govern China today.

During his 27 years in power, Mao improved life expectancy and literacy rates and increased the number of doctors. He also drove imperialism out of China by establishing the People's Republic. Significant technological advances occurred during his leadership, including the launch of a satellite.

Indian soldiers tortured three Kashmiri men to death in the Indian-administrated territory of Kashmir. The three men were identified as Safeer Hussain, Mohammad Showkat, and Shabbir Ahmad, who were taken into custody by the Indian army.

The army had detained at least eight civilians for interrogation following an attack on two army vehicles in Poonch that left four Indian soldiers dead and three injured. The Indian military is widely perceived as an occupying force in Kashmir and Jammu.

The Indian soldiers film themselves torturing and abusing the detainees. The killings and the harrowing video sparked protests in Srinagar.

Earlier this month, India's Supreme Court revoked the autonomous status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, marking a new escalation in the ruling Hindu nationalist BJP party's crackdown on India's only Muslim-majority region.

A continuing series of Turkish air strikes pounded northeast Syria, an area controlled by a Kurdish-led autonomous administration. Unmanned drones bombed infrastructure targets, resulting in at least 13 casualties, according to local reports.

The airstrikes were concentrated on critical sites, including oil refineries, a grain silo, cement plants, and a vital railroad station, significantly impacting the region's supply chain. Qamishli suffered ten additional airstrikes this morning. Protests erupted in the Qamishli and Raqqa regions, demanding an end to the bombardment.

The "Democratic Autonomous Administration" condemned the attacks by NATO's second-largest army, warning that the international response would leave the Turkish state without consequences. The current administration of NE Syria grew out of the Kurdish-led guerrilla forces and organizations that were leading the war against ISIS in the region.
