How bad is the humanitarian situation?
The death toll from Israel’s relentless war on Gaza has reached 27,019, with more than 66,139 people injured.
Israeli occupation forces killed a medical staff member of al-Amal hospital near the hospital gates. Meanwhile, an older woman and an infant died due to a shortage of the oxygen they were depending on.
Israeli Occupation Crimes in Gaza
Following the Israeli military’s partial withdrawal, over 30 bodies buried in black bags under the sand were discovered in a UNRWA school in Beit Lahiya, north of the Gaza strip. The bodies were executed at point-blank range while handcuffed and blindfolded.
The burning of Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip by Israeli occupation forces is the implementation of orders from their officers leading the fighting, as reported by the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz.
What is the economic impact of the war on Gaza?
Gaza's economy shrank by 24% in 2023, nearing its 1994 level, while 79% of Gaza's labor force is unemployed.
Restoring pre-conflict socioeconomic conditions in Gaza will take decades and requires substantial foreign aid, according to a new assessment by the UN.
What is the situation in the West Bank?
Israeli occupation forces have conducted several raids across the occupied West Bank, while violent clashes between Palestinian resistance groups and Israeli forces erupted in Tubas city of the West Bank.
Israeli occupation forces have detained at least 44 Palestinians during overnight raids across the occupied West Bank. Since October 7, Israeli forces have detained at least 6,460 Palestinians in the West Bank.
What are the updates from UNRWA?
Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called for the closure of the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, "It's time for the international community and the UN itself to understand that UNRWA’s mission must be terminated," Netanyahu told visiting UN delegates.
UNRWA staff were forced to flee Khan Younis due to Israeli bombardment. "We've lost a health clinic, major shelters – facilities that were supporting the people of Khan Younis," says Thomas White, UNRWA’s director in Gaza.
Legal cases against the Genocide
A U.S. federal court dismissed a lawsuit against US President Joe Biden while admitting, "Israel’s military siege in Gaza is intended to eradicate a whole people and therefore plausibly falls within the international prohibition against genocide."
Israelis filed a lawsuit in a US federal court in Washington, demanding that Iran pay compensation for the murders and the physical and mental injuries - "for its responsibility" in the October 7 attack.
About 70 US cities, including Chicago and Seattle, have passed resolutions in relation to Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, with most calling for an immediate ceasefire.
What is happening in the region?
The European Union plans to launch a naval mission in the Red Sea within three weeks to help defend cargo ships against attacks by the Ansarallah group in Yemen, said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
Yemen’s Ansarallah group carried out a missile attack, targeting a US vessel ship that was heading to the ports of occupied Palestine, while US and UK forces launched at least 7 strikes on Hodeidah city of Yemen.
What is the situation at the Lebanese border?
Lebanese Hezbollah launched two anti-tank missiles at Israeli settlements and outposts, north of Occupied Palestine. More than 500 houses and buildings were damaged by Hezbollah attacks since October 10.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has warned local authorities in northern Israel that power may be lost in the event of a wider conflict with Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War.

Three years ago, Myanmar’s military, the Tatmadaw, overthrew the civilian government. Since then, numerous resistance groups and ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) have risen, recently launching major offensives against the military regime. But who are these groups, and what drives their fight?
In October, an alliance of three major ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) called the Three Brotherhood Alliance (3BHA) launched the ongoing Operation 1027, intending to end oppressive rule by the military government. The alliance was founded in 2019, before the military coup of 2021.
Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA): The MNDAA, part of the 3BHA, is the armed wing of the Myanmar National Truth and Justice Party (MNTJP) representing the ethnic Han Chinese Kokang people, which it says it is fighting for autonomy.
The group has existed since 1989 after breaking away from the Communist Party of Burma (CPB) and is based in the Kokang region of northern Shan State on the border with China, with which it maintains close ties. Following a 20-year ceasefire with the Myanmar government, fighting broke out again in 2009. Earlier this month, the MNDAA was said to have taken back control of the entire Kokang region.
Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA): The TNLA was founded in 1992. The TNLA is the armed wing of the Palaung Self Liberation Front (PSLF), a political organization founded by fighters from the ethnic Ta’ang minority in northern Shan State. In December, the TNLA took control of the Pa Laung Self-Administered Zone, set up by the previous civilian government in 2011. The group says it is fighting for the self-determination of the Ta’ang people and “real federalism” in Myanmar.
Arakan Army (AA): Founded in Rakhine State in 2009, the AA, the armed wing of the United League of Arakan (ULA), is the largest group of the 3BHA with an estimated 30,000 troops. They say they are fighting to restore the sovereignty of the Arakanese people of Rakhine while being active in various regions across the country. The AA has also recruited troops from the Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority from Rakhine, who are the target of an ongoing genocide at the hands of the Myanmar military.
People’s Liberation Army (PLA): The PLA, the armed wing of the CPB, is one of several minor groups active in Operation 1027. After collapsing in 1989 along ethnic lines following a split that gave birth to various EAOs, the self-described communist force has been resurrected following the coup in 2021. They continue to fight in several states across the country alongside other groups.
Just weeks after the launch of Operation 1027, various EAOs of the Karenni people launched their own major offensive, codenamed Operation 1111, intending to capture Karenni State, the homeland of the Karenni people.
Karenni EAOs: The major Karenni EAO active in Operation 1111 is the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) which was founded following the coup in 2021, meant to be a fusion of all Karenni State’s dispersed youth forces. In addition to the KNDF, there are older groups that predate the coup such as the Karenni Army (KA) and the Karenni National People’s Liberation Front (KNPLF). The ideological outlook of the Karenni EAOs varies from right-wing nationalism to some being more left-leaning.
People’s Defence Force (PDF): Besides the EAOs, there is the PDF, the most significant resistance force operating in Myanmar. They are the armed wing of the National Unity Government (NUG), the parallel government representing the deposed civilian government. Set up right after the coup, the PDF is made up of several smaller groups that operate across the country with the ultimate aim of “restoring democracy and building a federal democratic union.” In some cases, the PDF has allied with various EAOs.

The Port Said stadium massacre, the “darkest day in Egypt’s football history,” which sparked massive anti-government protests, erupted today 12 years ago. Here is what happened.
The rival teams Al Masry and Al Ahly faced off in Port Said in 2012 when thousands of armed Al Masry fans attacked Al Ahly’s tribune, killing at least 74 people. Many of the deaths were due to police refusal to open the stadium gates.
In the following days, large-scale civil unrest broke out, including a general strike demanding the resignation of the ruling military council.
Many believed that the police orchestrated this massacre to retaliate for the humiliation suffered at the hands of the ultras, which spearheaded and fought off the police during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.
Almost exactly one year earlier, regime supporters tried to crush the protest in Tahrir Square during the Egyptian Revolution protests. Football ultras were at the frontline, protecting protesters in Tahrir Square during the unrest.
The Al Ahly Ultras Association was known for its passionate revolutionary chants, which were sung in Tahrir Square during the revolution and its aftermath.
Seventy-three defendants, including nine police officers and two officials from Port Said’s Al-Masry club, were charged in the aftermath of the massacre and given ten death sentences.
In 2015, a Cairo court designated all ultra-groups in Egypt as terrorist organizations, and they were outlawed. Dozens of ultras from different clubs have since been detained, with ex-Ahly and national team star Mohamed Aboutrika added to Egypt’s state terrorism list.

French farmers continue their "siege" of Paris, blocking major highways and dumping waste at government offices as the protest edged closer to the capital. They argue that government measures to quell the protests did not go far enough to meet their demands for better pay and living conditions.
The farmers say that these protests result from long-standing issues they face, including concerns over insufficient remuneration, lack of government aid, free trade agreements, pesticide use, and what they deem unfair competition with farmers from countries with less strict food quality norms. Among several other farmers' unions, the National Federation of Farmers' Unions (FNSEA) and Young Farmers (JA) are taking a leading role in these protests.
Recent data from The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) revealed that in 2021, 18% of French farming families lived below the poverty line. Additionally, data from La Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA) in 2015 indicated that nearly one-third of farmers earn less than €354 a month.

Kenya’s women make history: The country’s largest-ever protest against femicide and violence against women erupted in Nairobi, the capital. Thousands flooded the streets in response to a surge in femicides, which have claimed the lives of at least a dozen women this month alone.
Between 2016 and 2023, Kenya recorded at least 500 reported femicide cases, with the actual number of unreported instances believed to be significantly higher. One in three women in Kenya has experienced sexual violence before turning 18, according to the Gender Violence Recovery Center.
“A country is judged not by how well it treats its rich people, but by how well it takes care of the weak and vulnerable,” said Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri, who joined the protest. On Kenya’s social media, videos are going viral of men reacting to the protests, some with death threats.
A key demand of the protests was prosecuting perpetrators, most of whom remain unpunished. “Perpetrators are going free, so we see even our government is neglecting us,” noted one protest organizer.

Why does Zambia continue to grapple with frequent and fatal mining accidents? Let's delve into the underlying causes and find out what globalism has to do with it.
The south-central African country has been a mining powerhouse for well over 100 years and is one of the top copper producers in Africa and the world. However, a significant number of its mines are run by foreign companies.
Even though an increasing number of mines are Chinese-owned, the major players remain some of the world’s top mining companies such as First Quantum Minerals, Barrick Gold Corporation, Vedanta Resources, and Glencore.
Regardless of ownership, working conditions are precarious across all mines. Several miners reported that the brutally long shifts and inadequate safety measures led to the frequently occurring accidents with dozens of fatalities annually while causing widespread environmental damage.
Just last month, a South African court dismissed one of Africa’s largest class-action cases against the British multinational mining company Anglo American after one of their mines poisoned over 100,000 in the Zambian town of Kabwe and turned it into one of the most polluted places on earth.
Facing declining copper prices since the mid-1970s, Zambia privatized its state mining company in the late 1990s due to international pressure. To attract investors, the government offered tax incentives and weakened environmental and labor laws, introducing casualization while undermining the unions.
The more than 20 years of privatization of Zambia’s mines saw a collapse in the number of permanent mine employees from 60,000 in 1994 to 28,000 in 2018. Simultaneously, temporary contract workers rose to 46,000 by 2018 while mining companies use labor retrenchment as their go-to response to fluctuations in global prices.
Any attempts at greater government control have been undermined by foreign mining companies through threats of mass lay-offs of workers. In 2018, First Quantum Minerals laid off 2,500 staff after the government decided to raise mining taxes.
In another instance where foreign companies got the upper hand, the Zambian state purchased Mopani Copper Mines from Swiss-based multinational giant Glencore in early 2021, propelling the country into an unsustainable debt while Glencore retains the right to buy the mine’s copper.
With the Zambian government, which heavily relies on the mining industry with mining contributing to over 70% of the country’s export, at the mercy of multinational corporations, most proceeds continue to flow out of the country.

🟡 Tension is increasing between Egypt and Israel following news on Israeli military planning actions at the Egypt-Gaza border. Recently, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has rejected a phone call from Israel's Prime Minister's Office, Benjamin Netanyahu.
🟡 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Qatar for financing Gaza's ruling party during a meeting with Israeli captives' families. In response, the spokesperson of Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “If these remarks are validated, they are irresponsible and undermine the efforts to save innocent lives, but are not surprising.”

29 years ago today, former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona kung-fu kicked racism out of football.
Cantona launched at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons who had been racially abusing him for being a “foreigner” at Selhurst Park Stadium. Cantona’s grandfather was from Barcelona, and was seriously injured fighting the armies of fascist General Francisco Franco in 1938.
It is reported that Simmons had a history of Nazi sympathies, attending far-right British National Party and National Front rallies, and attacking a Sri Lankan-born man in a violent robbery in 1992.
Simmons reportedly ran down 11 rows in the stand and heralded xenophobic insults at Cantona, who in response raced towards Simmons, climbed up the fence and gave him a kung-fu kick.
Cantona received a 9-month ban, was stripped of the captaincy of the French national team, fined £10,800, and penalized with two weeks of community service. “I have one regret,” Cantona said in an interview last year. “I would have loved to have kicked him even harder.”

Far-right Hindus in New York chanted for more mosques to be taken over in India, during their gathering for the inauguration of Ram Temple.
The temple, dubbed the "Hindu Vatican", is being inaugurated in the city of Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, on the site of the 16th century Babri Mosque. That mosque was destroyed in 1992 by a mob of 150,000 Hindu extremists and paramilitary forces led by the BJP. Nationwide Islamophobic riots ensued, killing approximately 2,000 people, mostly Muslims.
The crowd in Times Square chanted "Ayodhya is just a teaser, Mathura and Kashi are pending", referring to mosques in the cities of Varanasi and Mathura, which Hindu extremists are threatening to raze to make way for Hindu temples.
Last year a senior BJP leader claimed the Islamic Mughal Empire, which ruled over much of South Asia from the 16th to the 19th century, destroyed 36,000 Hindu temples to make way for mosques, and threatened that all of them would be reclaimed.
Islamophobic state-sponsored violence, including pogroms, home demolitions, and attacks on Muslim shrines have surged since 2014 when the BJP came to power, and mainstreamed Hindutva ideology, which is based on Hindu supremacy.

WATCH TOMORROW: "The Siege of Jenin: Israel’s War on the West Bank", an on the ground documentary showing the devastating consequences of Israel's attack on Jenin Refugee Camp.
In December last year, Israeli forces invaded the camp in the occupied West Bank, first draining resistance fighters of ammunition, then ensuring they had no backing from the Palestinian Authority forces. With electricity, water, and telecommunications shutdown, Palestinian civilians are bearing the brunt of the siege and scores of residents have been indiscriminately killed by Israel.
This is part of the all out war on Palestine, and the style and size of the destruction in Jenin parallels what Israel is inflicting on Gaza.
