“Germany [...] supports a genocide” – Watch Left MEP Mick Wallace connecting Germany’s genocidal past to its current material and political support for Israel’s war on Palestine.

Not one EU member is backing South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel. In a shocking move, Berlin officially rejected the court case, drawing sharp criticism from Namibia, the country that suffered the first genocide of the 20th century at the hands of German colonialism.

Massive protests erupt across Germany in the wake of record poll ratings for the far-right AfD party (Alternative for Germany) and the uncovering of the party’s plot to launch mass deportations after seizing power. Politicians of the previous ruling Christian Democratic Party (CDU) also attended the AfD-led meeting. Further protests are planned for the coming days.

The AfD is on the verge of becoming Germany’s main opposition party to the ruling coalition of the Social Democratic, Liberal, and Green parties, which is increasingly plummeting in the polls. The coalition is failing to tackle critical domestic and foreign policy issues such as the war in Ukraine, the Gaza war, and the rising cost-of-living crisis in Germany.

Investigations revealed last week secret meetings of the AfD together with fascist organizations, CDU politicians, and top German businessmen. At the meeting, a “master plan” was discussed, which the AfD calls “remigration” – the expulsion of people with a migration background.

The latest developments have sparked widespread calls for the AfD party to be banned, a vital demand of the current mass protests. Top politicians in the ruling coalition have spoken out in favor of a ban, although the liberal faction, the FDP, is more critical of a ban. Germany’s oldest mainstream news program, Tagesthemen, also published an editorial article titled “Commentary on the AfD ban: the time has come.”

Over 1,300,000 people signed an online petition calling for the outlawing of AfD top politician Björn Höcke, who, according to a court ruling, can be classified as a fascist.

The construction of yet another new US military base on the Japanese island of Okinawa began—an island known for its countless incidents of criminal offenses by US military personnel.

In December, Japanese authorities, without the consent of Okinawa Prefecture, approved the continuation of constructing a US military base close to the city of Nago. Now, construction has begun.

The Ryukyu Islands, of which Okinawa is the largest, have long been regarded as an “outpost” and “fortress” in East Asia by Japan and the US. Despite accounting for only 0.6% of Japan’s territory, the island is home to at least 70% of US military bases in the country.

US military personnel stationed in Japan are granted privileges like extraterritoriality, resulting in them usually going unpunished after committing a crime.

According to statistics from 1972 to 2019, US troops and their families stationed in Japan committed about 6,000 crimes in Okinawa, including robbery, rape and murder. A report by the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) revealed that the yearly number of criminal offenses has continued to increase since 2019.

Not only are US troops wreaking havoc on the island, US military bases in Okinawa have largely constrained local economic development. The prefecture’s per capita income is only about 70% of the Japanese average, the lowest level in the country.

Despite decades of protests by residents, US military facilities in Okinawa have increased over the past 50 years, from 58.8% of Japan’s total in the 1970s to at least 70% today.

The US is likely to further expand its military presence in the area with tensions rising in East Asia.

Did you know that the CIA once organized Patrice Lumumba to be executed by a firing squad? On this day in 1961, Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of Congo, was executed by a firing squad following assassination plots hatched by the US and Belgian governments.

Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s first democratically elected leader, was born in 1925 in the village of Onalua in Belgian-occupied Congo. The revolutionary Pan-African challenged the colonial status quo, making himself the mortal enemy of the global North.

After Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960, Lumumba became the country’s first prime minister. 60 years of Belgian rule in Congo was filled with terror and genocide, leaving up to 15 million people dead and plundering the country’s wealth.

The US was an early ally of tyranny in Congo. The 1884 Berlin Congress granted Belgian King Leopold II colonial control and private ownership of the entire 2,600,000 square km Congo Basin region. The US had already recognized his claim to the territory months before the conference.

Congo’s immense natural wealth, including uranium, became strategically crucial for US global hegemony and its nuclear weapons program. The US acquired its immense natural wealth and uranium to build the atomic bombs it dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

When Lumumba became Prime Minister in June 1960, he promised to break with imperialism and championed pan-African solidarity. Lumumba’s rise to power threatened US corporate interests and triggered Cold War paranoia.

A cable from CIA director Allen Dulles on August 25, 1960, read, “We are faced with a person who is a Castro or worse.” He subsequently ordered the CIA station chief in Congo: “Lumumba’s removal must be an urgent and prime objective... and a high priority of our covert action.”

The US and Belgium supported rival politicians, leading to Lumumba’s kidnapping and assassination by Colonel Joseph Mobutu’s forces. Mobutu’s rule, backed by the US and Europe, solidified the neo-colonial grip on the country.

During three decades of bloody rule under the US and European-backed Mobutu, the dictator came to control over 20% of the DRC’s assets, and his wealth ballooned to $5 billion, equal to the country’s external debt.

Today, the consequences of Lumumba’s murder are still felt in the DRC. The country has approximately $24 trillion in raw minerals, including almost half the world’s known cobalt reserves, found in batteries of nearly every standard electronic device, from phones to electric cars.

While multinational corporations continue to plunder the wealth of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the country is one of the five poorest countries in the world, with some 60 million people living on less than $1.90 a day.

More than 300 farmers tried to storm a supermarket in Avignon, France, setting fire to barricades in front of its doors and occupying its parking lot with tractors in protest “against unfair payment.” The Young Farmers’ Union, which led the protest, emphasized they are working at a loss, under pressure from large-scale retail negotiators to cut prices.

“Through this cry of alarm, we are denouncing the measures announced by our government, which is slow in coming, and promises that have not been kept” - France’s government is failing to deliver on promises to protect farmers from exploitative corporate policies.

“We are fed up. [...] Today we can’t take it anymore, and we have to go out into the street”’ - said another union spokesperson.

The protests continue a broad trend in several EU countries, with farmers rising up against working conditions and regulations linked to EU laws. The protests echo last week’s week-long farmers’ revolt in Berlin, Germany. Similar protests have erupted in the Netherlands, Belgium, and other EU countries in recent months.

Iran's IRGC launched several ballistic missile attacks against alleged Israeli espionage targets and a base hosting U.S. military personnel in Iraq's Kurdistan region. Another IRGC-claimed long-range missile attack also hit targets in northern Syria, allegedly linked to the so-called Islamic State.

The strikes on targets in Syria came in response to a devastating ISIS-claimed bombing in Iran's Kerman earlier this year, in which at least 103 were killed, according to Iranian state media. The alleged Mossad base in the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region was reportedly linked to several targeted killings of senior IRGC commanders since October 7.

The attack also killed oil tycoon Peshraw Dizayee in Erbil, who reportedly facilitated oil exports to Israel. In total, local authorities report at least four dead and five wounded.

Bases of the U.S.-led coalition in Syria and Iraq have come under fire over 100 times since the Palestinian October 7 offensive with rockets and threatening attacks by various non-state militias in retaliation for Washington's support for Israel's war on Gaza. As a result, the U.S. increased its military presence in Iraq and Syria with 1,500 troops, officially announced in early January.

With the city authorities’ approval, about 500 joined a far-right anti-immigrant torchlight march through central Paris, an annual event organized by the French far-right group Paris-Fierte. As the fascists marched through the heart of Paris near the monument to Saint Genevieve, the patroness of the French capital, about 300 anti-fascists organized a counter-protest under heavy police surveillance. However, no clashes were reported.

The march comes as French President Emmanuel Macron’s teamed up with the far-right to pass a controversial new anti-immigration bill last month. Lawmakers from Macron’s centrist party voted for the bill along with the conservative Les Républicains and fascist leader Marine Le Pen’s National Rally Party.

The recent rise in anti-immigrant and far-right rallies is not unique to France. Just in recent weeks, fascists have rallied across Europe, with hundreds marching through Rome, Italy, while doing the Roman Salute. Meanwhile, the far-right in Germany discussed the deportation of millions of migrants while reaching an all-time high approval rate in nationwide polls.

On this day in 1919, German revolution leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were murdered by a gang of right-wing army officers, led by the Social Democratic Party.

Luxemburg and Liebknecht co-founded the anti-war Spartacus League Spartakusbund], which later became the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Together, they led the Spartacist uprising in Berlin.

The SPD brutally crushed the uprising. It saw soldiers obliterating what was left of the resistance and conducting air raids in working-class neighborhoods.

They were overseen by Germany's first social-democratic chancellor, Friedrich Ebert, who "hated revolution like a mortal sin.

Yemen lays bare the cracks in the empire's facade. The West's reaction to stop a months-long relentless war, apartheid, and an alarming death toll nearing 25,000? Next to nothing. But Yemen disrupting the flow of global capital? Unforgivable.

The US and UK launched 73 bombardments against Yemen, escalating international fronts beyond the war on Gaza, a dangerous step towards full-scale regional war. Here’s what happened.

After more than three months of Israel’s extermination war against Gaza, Western states bombed Gaza’s main ally in Yemen in their first drastic military action since the war began.

When Israel declared war on Gaza in October 2023, Yemen’s Ansarallah, commonly referred to as the “Houthis,” joined the war on the side of the Palestinian people a month later. About 70% to 85% of Yemen’s population lives under Ansarallah’s governance.

They quickly proved to be an effective ally of the Palestinian resistance, most notably for its blockade of the Red Sea and the targeting of Israel-linked ships and those bound for Israeli ports, effectively cutting them off from the world.

Yemen’s Red Sea blockade has turned around more than 2,000 ships. The threat to the flow of world capital clearly bothered the West more than Israel’s months-long war against Gaza.

In its justification, the White House also referred to a new UN Security Council resolution condemning Yemen’s naval blockade. Russia, China, Algeria, and Mozambique abstained.

A military source in Sanaa stated that countries that will open their airspace to the US coalition for attacks against Yemen will become target of Yemen’s response.

Senior Ansarallah official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said that Yemen’s goal is to “stop the crimes of genocide in Gaza” while the US and UK are “supporting and protecting its perpetrators.”

“Every individual in this world is faced with two choices that have no third: Either to stand with the victims of genocide or to stand with its perpetrators,” he added.

🟡 Latest War on Gaza news roundup:

🟡 The death toll from Israel’s relentless war on Gaza has reached 23,708, with more than 60,005 injured.

🟡 Since October 7, Israeli forces have killed on average 100 children a day, adding up to at least 10,000 children in total or one percent of the total children population in the Gaza Strip, according to a new Save The Children report.

🟡 The daily death rate in Gaza is higher than that of any other major 21st century conflict as Israel’s military is killing Palestinians at an average rate of 250 people a day, Oxfam reported.

🟡 Israeli forces damaged or destroyed 24 cultural centers, and approximately 195 historical buildings, including 20 mosques and churches across the Gaza Strip, Gaza’s Ministry of Culture reported.

🟡 Israeli attacks killed three journalists in the last 48 hours, raising the death toll of journalists since October 7 to 117.

🟡 Palestinian resistance fighters responded to a massive incursion by the Israeli occupation forces in Nour Shams refugee camp in the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarm.

🟡 Iraq’s resistance killed three Israeli military intelligence officers in a drone strike that targeted their headquarters in Erbil, Iraq, the Jerusalem Times reported.

🟡 The US and UK bombed Yemen in response to Ansarallah’s blockade of the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestine, further increasing the possibility for a full-scale regional war. Ansarallah condemned the attack and warned that the attackers that their military bases across the region will come under attack if they decide to increase aggression, adding that they won’t stop the blockade of ships bound for Israeli ports.

🟡 The US supply of arms to Israel violated domestic laws and policies in the US Human Rights Watch reported while also noting that the breach effectively violated international law.

🟡 US Media reported Israeli deaths 16 times more often than Palestinian deaths in the first six weeks after October 7, a report by The Intercept revealed.

Elections in Taiwan are just around the corner—an election between war and peace? Here’s what you need to know.

Since the East Asian island’s first elections in 1996, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan’s two major political parties, have pitted themselves against one another.

The KMT, which used to rule mainland China, is remembered mainly for its US-backed military dictatorship of the island from 1949 to 1987.

However, the KMT, now the main opposition party, has since shifted towards favoring close ties and dialogue with Beijing.

The neoliberal DPP, on the other hand, pursues a much more hawkish stance towards Beijing, promoting Taiwan as a country separate from China while aiming to expand Taiwan’s military and its already strong ties with the US.

While Western media and the DPP love to hype up a “threat from the mainland,” only 53% of Taiwanese consider the Chinese government’s attitude towards them to be unfriendly.

For many, China isn’t the biggest concern, unlike the US like to put it. Low confidence levels in the US as a stable partner for Taiwan were recently revealed, with only 34% agreeing that the US was a trustworthy country, a drop of more than 11% since 2021.

The DPP has held a slim majority over the past eight years. However, with much of Taiwan’s population evenly divided between the KMT and the DPP, the island’s future remains uncertain as the US keeps driving a wedge through the Taiwan Strait.

At least 15 people have been killed in Papua New Guinea after mass riots broke out yesterday over pay cuts in the public sector. The government claimed that the pay cut was a “glitch” and would be reversed in the next month’s paycheck, but it was not enough to calm the fears of those protesting who proceeded to loot stores and burn a vehicle in front of the Prime Minister’s residence.

Police officers led a strike after noticing a pay cut in their latest wage packet. Shortly after, protests broke out across the country that ended in riots and looting, with images showing people taking essential goods such as food and household appliances.

Prime Minister James Marple then deployed the military to restore order until police returned to work. The government is a close ally of Australia and the US, with which it has numerous “security agreements” as the southwestern Pacific country is seen as a buffer between Australia, China, and the rest of the Asia-Pacific.

The country has suffered months of rising inflation and unemployment. UN figures say that 40% of the population lives below the “extreme poverty” line with a minimum wage of around $150 per month.

The dead are split between the capital, Port Moresby, and the city of Lae, although it’s not confirmed yet if those dead are a result of the chaos during the rioting or from the military repression.
