Another router has OpenWRT now flashed onto it.

Had to first boot an older image then flash it. Then I could load the bigger image (newer firmware) and flash that.

Presumably I could not flash the bigger image whilst net-booted from it because the whole OS was in RAM alongside the uploaded image which jumped out of available memory. I guess that is why.

All in all, a great day!
