Hippeastrum flowers

Camellia
Camellias are flowering shrubs and trees native to eastern and southern Asia. The camellia depicted in this painting has a large, showy flower in white and red. Camellias are prized for their beautiful blooms that appear in late winter and early spring. Though often associated with Japan, camellias grow wild in China and were first cultivated there before being introduced to Japan and the West.
Cobblers pegs (Bidens pilosa) are a common wildflower with small yellow daisy-like flower heads that bloom throughout summer and autumn. The flowers have white petal-like rays around a central yellow disk and sit singly atop long slender green stems reaching 60cm high. The leaves are finely divided and fern-like, arranged oppositely along the square stems. Though considered a weed, cobblers pegs provide an important nectar source for pollinators. Their nodding yellow flower heads close at night and open with the sunrise.
