After deploying the Babelfish [1] machine translation engine at AtlaVista in the 1990s, Henry has been working on Decentralised social Networks since 2004 at Sun Microsystems when he took up foaf, contributing to the Atom Syntax syndication format, WebID Authentication, then in 201x worked on Linked Data Protocol, Social Linked Data Platform (Solid), and now is working on Access Control. He read philosophy, spent three years immersed in [2] Category Theory towards a Solid Phd, and earns a living programming in #Scala. He will also talk to you about the #WebOfNations. Ah I see there are posts on your #Mastodon account here:

https://mas.to/@kissane/110798472726958576

but the reply that I posted to your post above from the w3c.social server here: https://w3c.social/@bblfish/110826493888539718

does not appear in the replies to your mas.to Toot above. Perhaps it will with time...

I sent my first zap to the bear above. So it works! Thanks.

I'll try zapping the other 5 as I browse around.

That note I posted via mostr.pub is available via the URL here for instance, but on #Mastodon it does not contain the link to URL which we do see on coracle for example.

https://w3c.social/@dbdc4dc6031900bb2cbce65958f468fb2af3c4251e5a2c84f4e93836522686fb@mostr.pub

I can quote a note from #Mastodon

nostr:note1aejmvy3vk9tk3ew4ye8etucs3lqmuu2sv5gwl84gpk7gpeke7nfsvn4wal

The first thing I noticed that was unnecessarily difficult on #Mastodon was that one could not easily add people on different servers to one's friend list without copy/pasting a URL after visiting a website. I had ideas about how that could be fixed.

But the biggest problem I found was the #censorship. I mean, Twitter has less censorship than Mastodon has now! How could that come to be? After thinking about that for a while, I found the problem is architectural:

nostr:note1dve7jxdmrk5j3euww7p07ere9ju768ywjksdqptpnkrlrchutu9s6v8net

That sadly does not look like it can be fixed. We were better off with #RSS or Atom feeds to tell the truth. No intermediaries to make #censorship decisions.

Yes, the main problem of the federated model is that you have house rules but global content.

The house rules make answering libellous statements on the global federated mastodon space that is copied everywhere very difficult.

The libellous Toots spread as in the song:

"Little by little, mildly,

in a low voice, hissing,

it goes flowing, it goes buzzing;

in people's ears

it enters deftly

and makes heads and brains

stun and blow.

Activists on the far #left also are prone to #censor, and on #Mastodon it is easy - just claim the person you don't want to speak out is a fascist, nazi, racist or some-such and threaten the admins of defederation. These activists know that

most admins don't have time to think these things through, so they'd rather delete the posts.

I explained this process in an email to the #w3c TAG

https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-tag/2023Jul/0011.html

That e-mail is missing this revelatory exchange where such an activist says that I am promoting fascist conspiracy theories because I was defending what two presidential candidates were saying namely #RFKJr and #Vivek Ramaswamy

In the first post, I refer to an interview of Presidential Candidate #VivekRamaswamy

who argues that the idea from the 1990s that the US could transform China through trade was flipped on its head and instead, China has infiltrated America and taught us about the

beauties of censorship and thought control with apps such as TikTok (and clearly even affected W3C policy)

Of course, the idea that America uses trade as a tool of empire is well known. There is a French cartoon on the subject from the 1980s called ā€œObelix and coā€ translated into numerous languages, including latin. I mentioned

that in the pictured Toot and in the equivalent post on Twitter here:

https://twitter.com/bblfish/status/1682642568251572227

The second is a video clip of an interview of the Presidential Candidate @RobertF by the famous Lex Friedman, where he explains the conflict in Ukraine starting with:

"Vladimir Putin could have avoided the war in Ukraine. His invasion was illegal. It was unnecessary. And it was brutal.

But I think it is important for us to move beyond these comic book depictions of this insane avaricious Russian leader that wants to restore the Soviet empire, and who made an unprovoked invasion of Ukraineā€¦ā€

He then proceeds to give a 40-year history of the conflict. That is not as much as Prof Timothy D. Snyder, who gave a course published online, which I watched on the history of Ukraine since 800 CE. But that lasted 4 months.

The short clip I pointed to was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bArqD8z2BDg&t=1s

And the point of that linking was just to show that RFKJr was not defending Putin but thought one should have a more complex view of the war if one wanted to know how it could be stopped.

So there you go: by shouting fascism, left-wing extremists get presidential candidates cancelled. I have not hung out in right-wing circles that much, so I can't report on what is going on there.

#zappddit, the reddit like #nostr client now works for me https://zapddit.com/t/zapddit .

I think that happened after I cleaned up my proxy list.

(I am not yet clear on how those work and why some are down, some are up, or how important various proxies are or how much political baggage may come with one or the other of them)

#RFKJr has repeated that he and all his family were vaccinated.

I also never thought about vaccination as a problem until I received huge pushback during #Covid19 arguing that giving medicine - which always has side-effects - to those who do not need it, risks the side-effects overwhelming the good effect.

I mean that is obvious. I made a little calculation that assumed that #Covid had a minuscule side effect here way less than it actually did have, and it already becomes visible.

It is paradoxical that the current US administration which was so adamant about locking people up to protect them from a foreign virus, is not serious about national borders.

There is a quite obvious analogical structures:

- National Border <-> human and animal skin

- Border Police and internal police <-> white blood cells (T-cells, B-cells, Natural Killer Cells... )

- intelligence organisations <-> immune systems (that learn from experience)

In both cases, there is a possibility of overreaction: puritanism can lead one to reject all foreign bodies, where we rely on many of them to function, but too much openness leads to internal organ destruction.

Still, on the #Covid19 front, the current #Biden administration as well as most nations around the world, reacted to a biological virus in a completely puritanical way, trying to install borders at all places, testing people for germs, forcing them to stay home, way beyond the danger of the virus and the cost those measures had for society.

So why refuse to have any security at the national borders, then?

I have seen many "Is #BritneySpears well?" tweets recently.

This documentary by #DragArtist and journalist Ryan Houlihan tells a story of #Hollywood's increasing reliance on #DeepFakes and #AI to cut out artists and writers and increase profits. How long can the machine cut itself off from life before it goes stale?

A documentary rich with paradoxes...

#censorship does not work when enough communication channels exist when counting the sets reached after quotient channels by ownership relations. (ie, don't count channels that have the same ownership twice).

Yes, it must be a relay problem with #zapddit. Because it loaded when I only had one relay in the NIP-07 plugin cache database. I then added 8 more and then it stopped functioning. So it does look like a little bug they need to fix.
