O termo “snapping” (traduzido em alguns contextos como “estimulação contraditória” ou “ruptura psicológica”) se popularizou principalmente a partir do livro Snapping: America’s Epidemic of Sudden Personality Change (1978), de Flo Conway e Jim Siegelman. Nele, os autores descrevem como certas técnicas de manipulação mental, bombardeamento emocional e mensagens contraditórias podem levar a um tipo de “quebra” ou mudança súbita na personalidade de uma pessoa.
No que consiste a “estimulação contraditória” ou “snapping”?
#Contradição constante: A pessoa é exposta a mensagens, ideias ou exigências que são conflitantes entre si (por exemplo, “faça isso” e simultaneamente “não faça isso”). Essa exposição continuada a ordens ou conceitos opostos gera confusão mental e desconforto.
#Sobrecarga emocional: Além das contradições lógicas, a sobrecarga de emoções (positivas e negativas ao mesmo tempo) cria um estado de desequilíbrio emocional. Esse desequilíbrio pode enfraquecer a capacidade de julgamento e deixar a pessoa mais vulnerável à influência de quem está promovendo essa “estimulação”.
#Quebra (ou “snap”): Sob intensa pressão e contradição, algumas pessoas podem ter uma espécie de “colapso” momentâneo, no qual abandonam subitamente antigos padrões de pensamento e adotam novos — muitas vezes aqueles sugeridos por um grupo, seita ou líder que utiliza essas técnicas de manipulação.
#Técnicas de manipulação: Grupos autoritários ou seitas podem deliberadamente empregar táticas de bombardeamento de amor (“love bombing”), imposição de culpa, humilhação pública ou isolamento social, alternando mensagens de aprovação e reprovação de modo contraditório. Isso cria dependência emocional e confusão, facilitando o controle.
### Olavo de Carvalho e o uso do termo
Olavo de Carvalho, em diversos de seus textos e aulas, mencionava esse conceito para alertar sobre estratégias de manipulação usadas por movimentos ideológicos, por certos grupos políticos ou até pelo marketing agressivo. Para ele, a “estimulação contraditória” seria uma forma de desestabilizar a capacidade de raciocínio e julgamento do indivíduo, deixando-o mais suscetível a aderir a narrativas e doutrinas específicas, mesmo que elas sejam incoerentes.
Ele apontava que, quando expostas a muitas contradições — seja pela mídia, por líderes carismáticos ou por pressões sociais —, as pessoas podem acabar cedendo a uma “síndrome de confusão mental”. Esse estado, segundo Olavo, facilitaria a manipulação ideológica, pois o indivíduo, desnorteado, passa a buscar um ponto de referência que lhe devolva segurança, mesmo que à custa de pensamento crítico.
