Username and password has a very specific UX for people now. I think this would confuse people because keys should not just be put into a website like basic auth creds.

This is so obviously and demonstrably not true. I think most people can understand most things if they put enough effort into them. But that's NOT the same as saying every person can learn everything at the same speed.
