Our encryption occurs client-side, our cryptographic code is open source ( https://proton.me/community/open-source ), and our tech can and has been independently verified. As explained previously, this case shows that we do provide privacy by default - even in cases when we receive a legal request we cannot contest, we are not able to share the encrypted content on our service with the authorities. All we have is the extremely limited metadata that we need for the services to function properly. If anonymity is part of your threat model, here are some tips: https://proton.me/blog/how-to-send-an-anonymous-email and https://proton.me/blog/use-protonmail-anonymously.
📎 Attachment previews are now visible in #ProtonMail’s message list on the web app.
You can quickly find the document you need and preview it without opening its email.

There's a difference between proactively violating user privacy and following court orders in criminal cases.
All companies (Proton included) have to follow court orders, but it has been proven multiple times in court that Proton's encryption cannot be bypassed. Proton however can't provide anonymity unless the user has proper infosec (like using Tor or VPN).
Here is one man’s nightmare: https://nytimes.com/2022/08/21/technology/google-surveillance-toddler-photo.html – don’t let that be you. Turn this feature off if you opted into the beta for Google Files today.
Thanks to BasicCatBR on Twitter for alerting us to this new feature so we could let our community know.
Here's how to turn it off:

We thought Google hit rock bottom with #privacy.
Its new beta feature on Google Files for #Android called “Smart Search" is the trap door.
This creepy new feature on by default & scans every file on your phone. Why is this bad? Because it could potentially ruin your life. (1/3)

Where do you get your #privacy news from?

S/MIME encryption and signing are not currently supported, however, we've shared your feedback internally for future consideration. We do not have a specific timeframe for when this might get implemented.
nostr:npub1ksl6shjvupyt79wk49psg7arxudd8g9m8yqdgltkypmm9y7hry5s79rezd Hi! Please note that the issues described here have been fixed in July 2022: https://mastodon.social/@protonmail/111051896508922720.

nostr:npub15s8zhztv5ssn03vsu4ffxys078hnfvreq6ff2xnes6xyqdz4n2yqnntt2y Hi! Note that you can take this action with any external email service, it doesn't have to be Gmail: https://proton.me/support/get-started-mail.
Gmail was used an example, mainly because our EasySwitch allows you to automatically setup email forwarding from your old Gmail account to your new Proton Mail one, in addition to email import.
If you are using #ProtonPass, we have some news for you:
🔗 Vault & password sharing is planned for later this year.
🌐 🖥️ In addition to the existing browser extensions and mobile apps, we are developing the web and desktop apps too. The web app is already in the works.
Find the entire Proton Pass roadmap here: https://proton.me/blog/pass-roadmap-2023.

And our EasySwitch not only allows you to import emails, contacts and calendars from Gmail, but also sets up automatic forwarding from your Gmail to your Proton Mail account, without sharing your Proton address with Gmail.
You can also set up email forwarding from other external services, not just Gmail.
nostr:npub1xtgmyda4tq2yhvyg06c0zuyzlu5589ey9vv57cf8gndxc4hcafuq98mhvm We are aware of this piece of legislation and we are very closely monitoring its evolution. We believe there are many ways to prevent abuse without breaking encryption or using mass surveillance. It is uncertain how this would apply without violating Switzerland's sovereignty.
nostr:npub1fefcsyn7hnjdvs94gzagugffspregrjtjggxjkvc8aqcl0ky5s5syns5yt There are multiple differences. For example, Proton Pass allows you to easily create unique alias email addresses upon signups, and it has an integrated 2FA authenticator: https://proton.me/pass.
However, at the end of the day, it all depends on your use case. We recommend that you check out our Reddit community (r/ProtonPass) to read other users' experiences and see whether Proton Pass fits your particular needs.
