Any friend of a libertarian is a friend of mine.
Wanna libertarian nostr address? yourname@vote.gold is available.
DM for more info.
Hi #Nostr
Today I am at a student event at UWCEA in Moshi called Let’s Talk Development where I will be interviewed about Bitcoin and AI and how it can impact Tanzania.
I also want to talk NOSTR so please reply with your flag if where you are from so I can Zap and demonstrate!
Thanks

Oh and …
(not to take advantage but … I could use a repost and a bit of mentoring to get started)

What is this “desktop” you speak of?
Also… when I type “@hodl” in nostur (and any good client with autocomplete :) no can find my hodlbod.
Clients should display and use verified nostr names in mentions and “usernames”, not metadata from “kind 0” profile fields.
At the nostr, even the devs are impersonators nostr:npub1jlrs53pkdfjnts29kveljul2sm0actt6n8dxrrzqcersttvcuv3qdjynqn
Lol.
Thanks. How would this scale, as new relays are requested?

Nostr's too centralized on GitHub. I know we're still in the 'ignore you' stage but for that reason and after seeing what they did to youtube-dl I've decided to host all new projects on Codeberg.
Codeberg is a cooperative based in Germany that runs a fork of Gitea called Forgejo. It has all the features I care about in a project repository and seems to be the best match philosophically with the nostr FOSS community vibe.
My first project is a comprehensive NIP index. Please join and give it a star. https://codeberg.org/nostr/nip-index
I created a Nostr org there mainly because it wasn't taken. If anyone would like to join, wants a repo or to help admin, let me know. GM, GE and GN. 🪺🌱🦠🐛🐣
Sounds legit to me …
The Nostr should be developed across distributed GIT hosts. Worth discussing.
- Repos can keep in sync by pushing to and pulling from each other,
- The whitelist of repos (at different hosts) can be included in the codebase.
- issue mgmt and dev chat still lives on GH, however. So that could evolve with time.

Relays Help!
Nostr noob and devops-in-training needs advice on server architecture and hosting infrastructure for a relay cluster. I have lots of questions and a few sats for an experienced relay host only.
- will have a paid “main” relay with temp storage for all verified users @ vote.gold, available for any nostr user with one time registration fee.
- will spin up private relays for teams at subdomain.vote.gold, with archival storage and a one time fee + monthly storage fee.
- will have a dashboard UI to get verified @ vote.gold usernames and to register subdomains, configure & monitor relays, and top up sats.
What would hosting architecture look like? Can host multiple relays on a single VPs? How do containers and kebernetes fit into all this? What an I looking at in monthly cost per instance? How do I know what compute resources I will need? How to start and how to scale? Pro tips?

You and I seem to be aiming at the same goal post. I’m building out Vote.Gold in exactly this way. Private group NIPs are being developed right now. Lots of proposed architectures … none settled yet … so I’d point you to the discussions on GitHub for more info.
Nostr IS Interoperability.
The value ADD of Nostr on the social internet is only its contribution to decentralized interoperability. It has nothing more ATM that it does well. As long as this interoperability is (appropriately) transparent to the (currently targeted) end user, with zero friction to discover and leverage novel use cases, then nostr wins.
Otherwise (death of a thousand NIPS) if clients and relays loose sight of interoperability (like: for the sake of new features?) nostr’s one super power will fade away.
“maybe 2-3 clients” is losing sight of the forest for the trees.

Yea.
That chasm illustrated by nostr:npub1alpha9l6f7kk08jxfdaxrpqqnd7vwcz6e6cvtattgexjhxr2vrcqk86dsn does have an “other side”, which is where “all my friends are there” plays out. So… how to cross that chasm?

IMHO : by building tools incrementally for hosting IRL “allied affinity groups” to communicate internally and find each other. As nostr is home to a growing diversity of these real world communities, it will grow closer and closer to having main stream penetration “where my friends are”.
By “allied affinity group” I simply mean IRL groups of people who have natural affinity for the same values that nostr and bitcoin hold.
One example is what I’m building at http://vote.gold … an “archipelago” of private relays for the US libertarian political party (and allied) local chapters, campaigns, and caucuses, held together by a custom client that facilitates inter-relay (within the community) communications.
Build tools for small “allied” communities, and the masses will follow.
So…
NIP-27 style URLs work across multiple clients to cross-link posts and comments from various threads. But I don’t see nostr:npub18m76awca3y37hkvuneavuw6pjj4525fw90necxmadrvjg0sdy6qsngq955 or nostr:npub1cyvdrwq55epxvucwwhmvz8zll2tdq6qml6jef4tykslnp9up8pzqp3ljam clients (that I use) implementing links to “share this post” in this manner.
Why is that?
If it’s only UX issues… they should be addressed.
UX benefits would include :
- open links in the SAME client
- open links (to other kinds) in user specified APPROPRIATE client.
- become aware of “back links” to any given post, the moment it is rendered.
- AND overall improvement toward “social productivity”, which is my term for one’s ability to extract and build upon useful information found in random social media threads.

For some reason (using Nostur app) mentioning nostr:npub1cyvdrwq55epxvucwwhmvz8zll2tdq6qml6jef4tykslnp9up8pzqp3ljam produces a link to “Nostur Guest Account”. (Oh well, I tried)
