It isn't the problem that it is so prevalent, but it isn't a separate entity anymore. It is nigh-on-impossible to replace without rebuilding almost every package in a distro 😔
I don't remember who posted it, but recently I started to say "Linux +" because you can make a very capable system with musl libc & busybox/toybox instead of the GNU tools (just look at #AlpineLinux ).
