🐕, 🦆, 🌱 New Spinsters: I’m not going to follow back until you post a bit. Wider Fedi: I’m not going to follow back if you post too much. Nostr: 2c60241a778e47057c7b457e8e31750216a924877c8c21637b719ba573568161

I’m really not sure how well they’ll do, because they’ll be going in the bed along the drystone wall, which I suspect is snail central, but we’ll see.

Three free hostas if I spend over £50, you say?

Well, if you insist….

(I learnt recently that hostas are not just edible but — by the somewhat dubious standards of obsessive self-sufficiency types — quite tasty. Not sure I’ll be trying them, although as my mum pointed out when I said this, the slugs definitely think so.)

Getting a bit sleety now.

Men stare. It’s not that you are exotic, or young, or black, or old, or white, or riding a motorcycle, or driving a car, or walking a dog. Whatever you do, men will stare. It’s not your fault, it’s just the way men are.

They stare at potentially sexually-available women. It’s a fault of men, not a fault of beautiful women like you.

Energy firms held a combined £8.1bn of customers’ bill overpayments at the start of 2023, new Ofgem figures show.

Many households pay a set monthly amount, building up credit in the summer to cover higher winter bills.

Companies can hold onto those overpayments, but MP Angus MacNeil accused them of holding “too much money” and “sitting on a nest egg”.

Industry group Energy UK said direct debits were based on forecasts made when unit prices were volatile.

Customers can request refunds, it added.

The system is designed so customers have higher amounts of credit in September and October heading into the winter, but it should balance out close to zero in April and May heading into the summer.

Energy regulator Ofgem said that “customers have the right to request their balance back at any time and be refunded in a timely fashion”.

But one customer, Dan Malcolm, told the BBC it took six weeks and hours spent on multiple phone calls to get just some of his money back.

The father-of-three from Dunfermline unknowingly built up £1,100 of credit with his supplier in September 2022…………………………………………………

I’m convinced my mother is being done like this. Her direct debit is twice mine, and she has a gas cooker.

She only gets a bill once a year for no good reason*, so it’s incredibly hard to check her actual usage.

*because they’re trying to force people to have a smart meter.

Maybe I should buy a second big mixer bowl!

Election season will soon be in full swing in much of the democratic world. Seventy-one percent of people living in democracies will vote in a national election between now and the end of next year. […]

Many of those elections matter a lot to the countries that have run social media influence operations in the past. China cares a great deal about Taiwan, Indonesia, India and many African countries. Russia cares about the U.K., Poland, Germany and the EU in general. Everyone cares about the United States.

AI image, text and video generators are already beginning to inject disinformation into elections. And that’s only considering the largest players. Every U.S. national election from 2016 has brought with it an additional country attempting to influence the outcome. First it was just Russia, then Russia and China, and most recently those two plus Iran. As the financial cost of foreign influence decreases, more countries can get in on the action. Tools like ChatGPT significantly reduce the price of producing and distributing propaganda, bringing that capability within the budget of many more countries.

Honestly, you might do better on “mastodon” than Nostr? Most of the Nostr types I come across are pretty much against extremist genderism.

You do realise you’re talking to us using a relay built by nostr:npub108pv4cg5ag52nq082kd5leu9ffrn2gdg6g4xdwatn73y36uzplmq9uyev6 who is a notorious TERF, right? And vegan.

You might just want to block our whole instance, my dear.

I’m bewildered to learn that that is a thing. I thought you weren’t supposed to stick things in your ear?

So this is kinda creepy….

Well, technically they broke the plumbing: someone handled the external outflow pipe in such a way that the (bodged*) connection inside the bathroom came loose.

*Looking at it, it has been slightly dripping for some time, as it wasn’t a proper join.

As it turns out, it’s actually going to save money: The Man (who, interestingly, is not The Boss; some sort of symbiotic experience vs admin thing going on between the two of them) was expecting to need to get a plumber in to lengthen the pipe outside the wall, but now that he’s disassembled bits of my bathroom he reckons that he can fix both problems by just adding a new length of pipe, and sealing it properly.

And fingers crossed he can reassemble everything without it looking a mess. He was being very careful of the paintwork etc.
