not as good as The Godfather, but yeah, i've seen it at least 5 times and i know i'll see it again

He probably does (I don’t watch him much but my impression is that he probably does), but that makes it all the more notable and indeed valuable when he calls out at least some of the toxic notions of the woke left.

He and Jon Stewart often are enforcers of the narrative of their chosen tribe, but they also from time to time critique the narrative from the inside, which is a vitally important activity for any community.

Looks like something I’ll want to play around with!

btw I gave a short talk at Nostrville yesterday entitled ā€œNostr, lists and Web of Trustā€ — I’ll post when the video becomes available.

What do bitcoin and nostr have in common?

For Alice and Bob to interact digitally, they must first commit to a set of digital tools of some complexity. Let’s call this the ā€œburdenā€ for their consensus.

Bitcoin and nostr each strive to minimize the requisite burden.

Although the criteria for digital burden will not be exactly the same for everyone all the time, ā€œburden minimizationā€ will be a Schelling point to help shape the decentralized web.

I’m attending and I’ll be giving a little talk on Friday on my efforts to bring web of trust to nostr! šŸ•ŗšŸ»

Sometimes the truth is right in front of our noses, and yet we are oblivious.

The reason I love the above shot: do you know who that guy is in the background? And what he’s doing? Blurry, out of focus … probably nobody of significance, doing nothing important. Right? WRONG.

Why? Well, iykyk. And if you don’t you don’t.

One of my favorite shots from quite possibly the best show of all time

Importation of NIP-51 List items with support of the nostr a-tag:

v0.2 alpha of Pretty Good Apps is out! Download it for osx, linux or windows here:

https://github.com/wds4/pretty-good/releases/tag/v0.2.1-alpha

This release adds support for NIP-51 Lists. In particular, this adds support for nostr’s a-tag, which allows the importation of items from one list to another. Why is this important? Because I see the ability to delegate list curation to your fellow nostriches, something that we can already do with NIP-51, to be a small but significant stepping stone towards DCoSL (decentralized curation of simple lists) and ultimately to the decentralized web.

In addition, Pretty Good Apps v0.2 adds a feature called Channels, in which a NIP-51 List is used in place of your follows list to generate your content feed. We need to give users a reason to use curated lists, and Channels is my first stab at an application. I am interested in what other ideas for applications of curated lists anyone may have! Feel free to discuss ideas here or start a discussion in the DCoSL repo: https://github.com/wds4/DCoSL/discussions

This is very much alpha software and there will be lots of bugs. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated, both what works and what doesn’t! You can let me know directly or leave feedback on the pretty-good GitHub repo as an issue or a discussion:

There will always be lots of tradeoffs between base chain, LN, and whatever other layers we ever manage to build. And this is (perhaps ironically) a good thing! Because it means every layer will be used, all the time, bc different users will want to make different tradeoffs for different transaction scenarios. Which means there will always be a demand for base chain transactions, which means we always have an answer for those who raise concerns about base chain security dropping to zero.

I’m aware of the lightning cycle attack you’re talking about (I’ve seen it discussed and aware some ppl seem to be screaming that the sky is falling) although I confess my knowledge of it is only cursory.

So maybe a dumb and naive question, and my apologies if that’s the case: what’s the point of rebroadcasting a transaction if it’s already been broadcast once? I assume (and perhaps this is my misunderstanding) that the attack strategy is to trick everyone into discarding some strategically chosen target transaction, and the point of the rebroadcast is that you’re flagging it for everyone’s attention, to ensure that transaction doesn’t get lost or forgotten. Which makes me wonder: what happens if the bad actor spins up a zillion sybil dishonest ā€œnetwork monitorsā€ and rebroadcasts a zillion unrelated transactions as distractions? If we don’t know which honest network monitors to listen to, the signal gets lost in the noise. Like a lightning cycle attack coupled with a network monitor ddos attack. My thinking is that the parallel ddos attack is rendered impotent if we know which network monitor(s) are honest.

What if the single passive good actor turns out to be a bad actor? We would need a way to replace the bad one with someone else. Selection of the actor is nontrivial.

This will include a concept graph, which will be where the concept of a ā€œnetwork monitorā€ is established and updated over time. (Your WoT will handle this too.)

And a decentralized web of trust to select the monitors.

You know they’ll be taking a hard look when 420 drops

I just liked your post on Pretty Good Apps and it shows up on damus. Woohoo!
