I feel the moon is a better option for long term colonies. The regolith is aluminum oxide and there is still water under the surface and inside craters. Plus, there is a smaller gravity well.
Once you get a power source established and dig a few tunnels, you can generate heat to turn the water to liquid and free the oxygen, yielding infinite air, water, and building material. The last major hurtle would be food.
