I have this weird hypothesis that humanity, as a species, needs an overarching enemy to sharpen ourselves upon or we fall apart.
It used to be nature, but that has been pretty well tamed. The aliens are taking their sweet fucking time showing up to the gunfight, so we are building an enemy because our bloodlust demands it.
