Bitcoin transactions per attendee tell us about the quality of the crowd that attends these conferences. Sometimes we get blinded by the shiny lights and big names but forget that NGU is not what matters.
We need to live by our words and beliefs.
I am also beyond proud to see how one of the smallest conferences in Europe, Baltic Honeybadger by nostr:npub1yul83qxn35u607er3m7039t6rddj06qezfagfqlfw4qk5z5slrfqu8ncdu, has the highest number of transactions per attendee.
Even prouder to work with and call my best friend, the mastermind behind this conference, nostr:npub1zu5tdnq7w63fgmsfz85te7e6zeg7y2lt8q8r9jp5zcg68jfy73jqraqtgz and to have done the same set up for nostr:npub1h493d0qgwhu95s82zd9sxrt3ckn3ttgvaf04z02neckadxw5fkvqte4cwz with her.
All of these conferences are organized by bitcoiners who do this because they clearly see the importance of leading by example.

The BRI aims to produce high-quality peer-reviewed publications about bitcoin from all academic disciplines.

Much academic bitcoin research is quite poor, because it's done by people who don't understand bitcoin.
Mora et al predicted "bitcoin alone could push emissions 2 degrees".
They failed to account for the difficulty adjustment *and* didn't know there was a block size cap!
Others like Taleb’s infamous "Bitcoin Black Paper" are unaware of Layer 2s like Lightning, and others are unaware of the supply cap -- perhaps bitcoin's most distinctive feature. Others make faulty assumptions about bitcoin user demographics.
These mistakes make their way into journalism, and policy. Bitcoin is multi-faceted in theory, and even more so in practice. Journalists can't be experts, so they rely on academics. Too many of those academics have let them down.
The good news is that there is good academic research on bitcoin. Work by Will Luther, nostr:npub18wgtxzhx75qd2aq3gn35mcv5m8zx7z6xdsf6a95asltys70deekqqjr2wn , nostr:npub12lzwey2hjc2ce0stwa3ldhg04h93wj263lvdhrf87qfzz9jsggeqwuntw2 , nostr:npub10afr060h0g3vf2ykynr6cvw2u7ta3tzpgjczfyufp420aeeen0xszf0xj0 , Matthew Ferranti, nostr:npub1ws69pst0kcaqa9cgm85l3xzkqrfuphldu5dv6r5cp8tjjzfyv82s5vxzeg and others understands and explains bitcoin very well.
But for academics interested in bitcoin, the incentives often don't line up. Few advisors will let their advisees focus on bitcoin, so bitcoin projects must be side projects. And without advisor or community support, these projects are rarely taken on.
The Bitcoin Research Institute fixes the incentives. We provide a community who can support scholars and give critical feedback on their projects, and we provide funds for travel and lodging.
We're removing barriers for scholars who want to work on bitcoin.
More academic work on bitcoin should be done by people who understand bitcoin. The BRI aims to produce that work, which will filter up to journalists and policymakers.

Fiji's Olympic men's rugby sevens team won the silver medal yesterday. Wananavu Team Fiji! They won all their games in the Olympic tournament, only to be defeated by host nation France in the final.
Rugby Sevens has only been an Olympic sport since the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Fijian men's team became the first-ever gold medalists, sparking national excitement and public celebration. You have to understand that rugby is like a religion on the island of Fiji and the players are revered as national heroes.
Whenever the national team plays, the whole country pauses and cheers for their team.
The 2016 gold medal was Fiji's first ever Olympic medal and meant so much to the Fijian nation that the Reserve Bank of Fiji issued a seven dollar note, which is still legal tender today.
Fiji's men's rugby sevens team also won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while the women's sevens team won bronze.
To commemorate this historic achievement, another sevens dollar bill was issued.
The notes are usually kept at home as souvenirs or trophies, but even today you might stumble across a seven-dollar note in Fiji while paying cash in a shop.
