Thinking of using a very old laptop to upgrade the ram and ssd and run a node there.

Do it, nothing saying you have to be constrained to the limitations of an SBC.

One con of going the laptop route is making sure it stays plugged in and the degradation that causes to the battery

no. I leave that for the morning. I already feel sorry for the 1&1 CS guy taking my call first thing in the morning. Obviously not his fault but he'll catch the morning Grinder and you don't want to catch the Grinder in the morning unless you made me coffee.

I’ve just come over from Reddit where a sub I used to frequent had a pretty bad day yesterday. The community points that Reddit had rolled out and with which many users were earning money as well as investing money into was abruptly cancelled. A huge sell off resulted and someone posted nostr as a possible alternative to those people affected. Interesting concept - thanks user rayfin on Reddit for introducing it to me
