Lightning fees is a race to the bottom. Market seeks lower fees to route and if a node is to earn from routing, fees can't be too high. Efficient fee discovery!
Fees also used to auto balance liquidity. Pretty slick self regulating system if you ask me.
With the discussion on Bitcoin filtering out inscriptions on nodes. Makes me appreciate how hard it is to censor decentralized networks.
