For me the biggest reasoning is the inability to get my account nuked for wrongthink, which has happened dozens of times and cost me approximately a decade and a half of networking contacts. Lost access to customers and suppliers, lost transcripts of discussions, lost access to photos that only existed on my social media accounts.
The ability to keep my contact list and content outside the control of some corporation that still has the taste of government dick in its mouth is priceless.
It may seem like it starts off that way, but corporations are happy to leverage government regulations to suppress competition.
