The feeling that on multiple viewings you get more out of a film is definitely one of my favorite things about films.

It's tied with that ability some films have (think 2001 or Mulholland Dr.) where after viewing people can come out having seen the same things but very different ideas of what the film is about. I love that discussion. I love seeing how other people's brains work and wondering how the fuck did you get that when I got this?!?! I love that.

Oh my guy! Look at this!

I'll start from the beginning then.

Heavy Metal was a comic/magazine in France then it made it's way here and was all over the place. Typical teenage boy scifi fantasy comics. Drawn by multiple artists, different scenarios and stories but tied together with themes and story arcs. One amazing artist Moebius is legendary.

The 1981 film:

And there's a sequel:

The answer to my question was The Fifth Element. Which has basically the same plot elements as the first Heavy Metal movie.

In additional trivia, Mobius (mentioned above) worked with film director/ comic writer/ magickian on another classic comic The Incal, which was the general inspiration for the Fifth Element, and Tails Waititi is trying to adapt into a film currently.

#[5] can explain how incredible the Incal is to you. He's schooling me right now.

May your day be for with creativity .

El Topo is amazing, but for a first it can be a bit much don't you think? Not knowing Jodorowski's film language yet, plus it hits you right off the bat with the esoteric knowledge.

If you don't know a little bit before jumping in I think a lot of the message is like

Beautiful. Gorgeous. Makes you want to know so much more. But with every little bit you learn, about life the universe, hell even just having more life experience, adds to the flavor of El Topo.

In my opinion the easiest place to start with Jodorowski.

A film obsessed with arms.

From a cult worshipping the never drying pool of blood from a long dead prostitute who's arms were hacked off, to a loving son who provides the hands for his armless ballerina mother.

May I present for your consideration,

Santa Sangre (1989)
