I used to have one of the original ledgers, the one that was basically a smart card glued to a bit of plastic. It was useless if you used it for receiving funds from a mining pool, wouldn’t let you sign a transaction using them.

It’s just an automated account showing who is DMing who. The note type for DMs includes the public key of each party and an encrypted payload. There’s a calculation to estimate the size of the message based on the size of the encrypted message.
