In the 1600s, Bavarian monks were prohibited from eating solid food during Lent.
Rather than settling for just water, these monks brewed a potent beer rich in carbohydrates and nutrients. They dubbed this concoction, sankt-vater-bier, which translates to "Holy Father beer."
Fast forward to 2011, a journalist named J. Wilson collaborated with a local brewery to recreate this historic brew. For 46 days during Lent, he lived off this beer, consuming four glasses on weekdays and five on weekends, with no solid food in his diet.
Wilson noticed that during the first few days of his experiment that he would get quite hungry, however, his body quickly learned to adjust. "My body... switched gears, replaced hunger with focus, and I found myself operating in a tunnel of clarity unlike anything I’d ever experienced.”
In the end, Wilson lost 25 pounds.
