One of 2023’s most extreme heatwaves is happening in the middle of winter.
South America is living one of the extreme events the world has ever seen.
Unbelievable temperatures up to 38.9C in the Chilean Andine areas in mid winter ! Much more than what Southern Europe just had in mid summer at the same elevation: This event is rewriting all climatic books.

Florida coral is dying after water temperatures exceed 100 degrees.
Water temperatures in the Florida Keys hit 101 degrees late last month, causing rapid coral death.
Now, researchers are scrambling to bring surviving species to land to preserve them in the event of even higher temperatures. While coral make up less than 1% of all ocean life, a quarter of marine species rely on them to live.

Greta Thunberg pulls out of Edinburgh Book Festival over 'greenwashing'
Climate activist Greta Thunberg has pulled out of a much-anticipated event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. She cited a sponsor's "heavy" investments in fossil fuel and accusing them of "greenwashing".
"As a climate activist I cannot attend an event which receives sponsorship from Baillie Gifford, who invest heavily in the fossil fuel industry", said the 20-year-old Swedish activist in a statement on the festival website.
Thunberg was due to speak at the event entitled "It's Not Too Late To Change The World" on August 13.

Taking out the trash: How do transnational waste traffickers operate?
Despite Western European countries having increasingly high rates of recycling, difficult-to-recycle plastic and other trash are frequently sent abroad.
Sneaky use of waste codes, fake documentation, corruption and taking advantage of control loopholes are among the many ways waste is illegally trafficked to countries with more competitive rates and lower environmental standards.

Reducing eco-anxiety is a critical step in achieving any climate action.
We all have times when we feel anxious about our future; perhaps this is more acute for many people this summer, as we experience unprecedented wildfires and heat waves due to the warming climate. General anxiety intensifies climate or “eco”-anxiety.
This can spur some people to climate action, while for others it can lead to a state of paralysis and inactivity. Our recent Canadian study looked at how values and action around climate change vary with an individual’s personality traits. We found that the higher a person’s general anxiety trait and the more they valued nature, the more likely they would engage in climate action.

Ocean temperature records are being broken around the world with dire consequences for the health of the planet.
The average surface temperature of the world’s oceans has hit its highest-ever level reaching 20.96C this week.
It broke the record of 20.95C set in 2016 and scientists say it is likely that the record will continue to be broken as temperatures are usually highest in March, not August.
It follows a pattern of marine heatwaves and record sea surface temperatures around the world.
