Yes please. As a newcomer, a big downside to Nostr is everyone talks about Bitcoin and Nostr. It feels like a world inhabited by bots instead of people - bots who can't come up with an original product name.

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

ssh bit@whisper.onthewifi.com

I only just got it going and then had some issues with my hosting configuration. It's hopefully accessible now at gemini://kleb.site

This weekend, I’m committing to adding content to my Gemini capsule and getting my web site mostly built with Astro.build.

#geminiprotocol #smallweb #indieweb

For a long time I have had an interest in alternate corners of the Internet. In the last year I've delved into:

- the small but thriving BBS scene

- small/indie web

- pubnixes

- Gemini protocol

- (the long-lived) IRC

...and now Nostr (sorry, but Mastodon doesn't interest me).

The culture here is very different from other places. The most striking difference is the push toward new tech vs efforts to make old tech more accessible and usable. This new decentralized tech competes with and expands on web 2.0, but has the same premise of how we connect with each other. Other experiences like web 1.0 and Gemini encourage you to discover, and take in information deliberately and slowly.

Another significant difference here is the emphasis on currency and economy (value for value), where other communities have intentionally isolated from any commercialism or exchange of value. Many on Gemini/small web are anarchist or communist, where Nostr seems very free market. I see value in both regarding how information is shared, but after living with web 2.0 social media so long, I enjoy an experience where content is just content for sake of expression, not content to produce results or create engagement.

Nostr seems like a wonderfully messy evolution and competitor to X, with a growing ecosystem by many passionate people. I'm glad it exists and enjoy how it's pushing new ideas. Yet there is still a part of me that has a greater rush in the exploration of a Gemini capsule, a personal web page, or a BBS forum or chat room, where every connection feels meaningful and every experience is unique. I would love to see ways that new technology could help foster such experiences of community and individual expression.

Gemini Protocol: the best social network

I chase the magic, and every once in a while, it's within my grasp.

Heard about Gemini roughly a year ago, but took a few months for me to research and download a browser to actually try it out (oh, if only I knew about the various https portals to Gemini!).

But once I got there, it was magical. No effective searching, tons of broken links, no pictures, no monitization: all culminating in every blog/website I found, appearing as a shimmering oasis in the middle of a barren land.

Products, nay, pieces of art, put together by artist making art for the sake of creativity!

These personal sites, would be seen by dozens, at most hundreds, or maybe passed over completely.

No way to comment, no central hubs for socializing, and yet, more social than any social media.

Your weird relatives, boss, or coworkers, are not going to find you here, so say and build whatever you want! Just no pictures, unless it's ascii.

And you have to wonder around the Gemini web through links in zines, web rings, and personal recommendations made on blogs.

It's the most human feeling social setting I've found online in a long time.

And what prompted me to write this post, is realizing it's also given me the best value for time out of all the other social places I hang out online.

Prior to it SSB held pride of place for introducing me to cool people, projects, and ideas.

And SSB is still firmley in secnd place, still so much cool stuff happening there.

But Gemini is king. So many interesting people, discussing fascinating projects, and pondering strange and fearsome ideas.

To finish out a hierarchy, I'd put the Fediverse next, and Nostr below that, in terms of having cool people and stuff.

And I gotta give Tumblr an honorable mention, not for what it is now, but for what it was long ago, giving me the taste for that magic, that I keep on seeking.

#gemini

Well put. There are a lot of great things that could be said about Gemini. There are a few places you can interact and comment now though! Check out bbs.geminispace.org or station.martinrue.com.

Also, curious, what’s SSB? Single side band?

My initial impression of Nostr is that it's an echo chamber of people talking about crypto.
