Was trying to explain to my therapist the other day who said "Why do you care what other people think?" and I explained that, if left to my own devices, I'd basically dress like a 1940s tramp and while maybe that might be considered "my style," when I'm in public I like to look like I made the effort to look like something approaching normal. When I'm at home alone though? It's grandma toddler all the way.

I am at the library. It is Banned Books Week. We have two major displays. Let's contrast/compare.

1. Downstairs (kids) has covers of books, you can look inside to see why they were banned/challenged. Interactive. Encourages curiosity.

2. Upstairs (adult) creates a barrier, has you read about banned books week. You have to go around to get at the books

I am often a crank about this stuff but I'm not sure creating an accessibility challenge is the way to teach people about this. But maybe it is?

nostr:npub1p4rpzym686zwxh7rv76cupvxe50kw7agvkusu8lnrkfveqrmfmxqgy6aux Yeah in the past tools like these have been part of these events and I'm a little surprised this one isn't. Like it seems weird to have a program about social media with no hashtag. But it's also sparsely attended so maybe I think it's a bigger event than it is. I'm not going to lead the charge on this one, but I keep forgetting about that mozilla option.

FEC: "We can't do what the EU does because the Supreme Court won't allow it under the first amendment" (paraphrased)

There's a recent 5th circuit decision (currently stayed) which is concerning which Weintraub thinks will wind up before the Supreme Court in terms of how government interacts with social media platforms.

Her advice for social media companies' election integrity efforts: be more transparent, work with independent researchers, get involved.

There are conversations at the FEC about dealing with generative AI and political comments and ads. "All the politicians are completely terrified" that someone will release deepfake ads with them saying things they never said. There's a current petition in front of the FEC asking them to do some rulemaking about AI. The government, however, doesn't do content moderation but maybe can legislate against fraudulent representation? YOU CAN COMMENT.

I hated to be such a crank about it, I know design is hard, but I'm in a LOT of active Slacks (at least a few for work) and it was a real problem to keep track of notifications with this redesign.

nostr:npub13vvfm5djl3y7y8rjnyw2wg4qyjx6hnkc44cn0rdw06agwc8kktvq8a0sze wow, thank you. I’ll review the notability criteria and send you some sources. Do other sources writing about books she has published work too, or do they have to be writing about her life?

nostr:npub1wnu4kvaex3ntuzr9nsm8af2y53gqpmfedprecrsx6r0c95p86c6s29cn3k if she is still alive, and forgive me for not checking that closely, then as much as possible it's helpful to find citations for anything that would go in a biography, because the guidelines are even tighter for people that are alive. So basically send along whatever you have, and we'll figure out a way to make it work. Often you can find one good profile article in the local newspaper that'll have a lot of useful information.

nostr:npub1vgwsw6v4g3j9u65nqf9e3u9dppxcd7ehdqcjkzgy6vcnrlq2crqqlyj25p I go OFF about Thoreau when people get that way. I was born just up the road from there. My life would have been really different if I just could have written all the time. or even had someone else type my stuff https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ishmaeldaro/thanks-for-typing-with-your-two-aching-fingers

nostr:npub1kdzu9knqjmte3pvn245t7xye0dx6w8vxnf8h5cpegw5helpmredsn64lew They cheat off of one another! I have seen some very very terrible power points that were just basically "the dirty parts" photocopied out of hundred page books

nostr:npub1l7ve526wews4rrhgeeyc5hz8yypnnw44yaxpdmaec5a6ldtlnufs9q70au Exactly. We have an odd situation in Vermont where we have a Republican Governor (mostly doing conservative judicial things but not a homophobe or transphobe afaict) and a very liberal Ly Gov so it's good to see him really hustling on this.

You can run a 9 volt through that and burn your fingertips a bit. And I'm pretty sure you can guess how I know that. :-)

Libraries were my escape from an abusive home life. I never see this mentioned of libraries. You not only fed my imagination and my knowledge but saved my life.

nostr:npub1fjdj5tj35876qnqkmaklqfe03n6md9lx2ek6lc6fm0vzxa0gxprq795ae9 I am so glad. We have at least a few kids in my community for whom the library is serving a similar purpose. Being an away-from-home safe place (with snacks maybe, or a clean bathroom) for younger people who can't or don't want to be home is so very important.

nostr:npub13vvfm5djl3y7y8rjnyw2wg4qyjx6hnkc44cn0rdw06agwc8kktvq8a0sze Oooh this makes me even more interested in the opportunity to improve the early masto experience through better onboarding docs, I’ll ask about the glammr one!

nostr:npub1qmcpm5qnud8p4az4enwx0arcnw38jxyq70yzphj5xdn9va6q8s4qryv6gx Yes, while I love my instance they're not the ones that made the onboarding document, that was a more general purpose one and I'll see if I could track it down. It was nicely thorough.

nostr:npub1k4uz82vjsjyv55w5aqh8ta7kdmhpzsa5xadm08aepgclpv33979q7p0yfm Nope this is even earlier than that. This is Don Hooper and his son I believe Sam Hooper owns the glove factory and his other son Miles Hooper owns the goat dairy

Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else's. Sure email should, in an ideal world, be asynchronous. Realistically not everyone uses it that way or views it that way. My sister's visiting this weekend so I'm checking out of email early and hoping the rain stops sometime soon. Have a good weekend.
