community simply = users

Freedom tech to me is anything that allows you to behave in a manner more aligned with your core values, whatever those may be, without the fear of repercussions from third parties, whatever those may be. I don't think that open source is a requirment for the tech to promote this type of behaviour amongst its users, however it is likely that closed source would have a tougher time gaining traction in the freedom tech community. Maybe the better question is what advantage does close sourcing a project offer to its creators beyond the primary goal of offering someone like dissidents a way to achieve their objectives.
