In 2003, Saturn released a commercial that ironically highlighted the inefficiency of cars and how much space they occupy.

The oil and airline lobbies have ensured that air travel remains the primary choice for intercity trips <500 miles in the US, knowing that people respond well to fast, frequent, and dependable train service.

Undoubtedly, the Green Line Trolley (visible in the lower part of the image) has been instrumental in the redevelopment of this site.

The transformation of San Diego Stadium underscores the extent of land occupied by surface parking in urban areas, and the potential for repurposing such space through redevelopment.

The Harmony of the Seas, the longest cruise ship in the world, is nearly 400 feet shorter than either parking garage at Apple’s HQ. All because Cupertino has some of the most archaic parking minimums in the country.

The Claiborne Expressway tore through vibrant New Orleans neighborhoods some 60 years ago. While I am happy to see federal money studying ways to mitigate the highway's impact, anything short of reverting it back to a tree-lined boulevard is not good enough.

At the moment, the developers are focusing on Site A, the portion of the site slated to get a new ferry terminal to SF. The 68-acre site will have 800 new housing units (25% affordable), as well as park space, restaurants, and shopping.

Since it's been vacant, it's been considered an EPA Superfund site, with remediation work taking years. While the USS Hornet is now docked there, it also was the site of the Matrix Reloaded filming and Mythbusters!

One of the most exciting infill projects in the country, in my opinion, is the redevelopment of the former 770-acre Naval Base in Alameda, CA. The base was closed in 1997 and has since been largely underutilized, despite being only 3 miles from downtown San Francisco.
