The UX depends on the client.
Im using damus on mac and iPhone. Which is really good right now.
Oh and you need a LnURL for your profile otherwise a welcome zap⚡️ is not possible

The best feature on damus except zapping is that links are opend in my real browser and not a shitty In-App-Browser.

I'm trying to link a npub from a website so when someone clicks it, it opens my profile in their preferred Nostr client.
I know it's doable because #[0] does it on his site and works fine.
E.g.

When I attempt it on my site, however, the link only opens up the client and doesn't go to my profile

But you need a client which supports that on your phone/ pc etc.
For example when you type nostr:// in safari on iOS safari asks is you want to open Damus

When you add a second login factor then you need a mail phone number etc. to log in.
But this doesn’t protect your private key in general
