Opinions about product management, technology news and inclusivity in tech. Diversity is about demographics, inclusion is about creating a sense of belonging.

As expected Reddit has won the battle with moderators but has likely lost the war. By shutting down the APIs, moderators have lost tools that supplemented the poor tools from Reddit.

Secondly, recruiting future moderators will be harder as it’s now clear they are not appreciated by Reddit but instead treated like indentured servants.

A broken clock fixed by taping a working clock over it is a metaphor for every codebase you’ll encounter in your professional career as a software developer.

Is it me or is it weird to frame not laying off employees due to high interest rates as “hoarding workers”?

It is now straightforward for websites to opt out of being used by OpenAI to train ChatGPT because they’ve published the identifying information of their web crawler.

I’m curious to see if many sites will do this and if so how badly it will harm ChatGPT. I suspect that most generative AI companies will not be as transparent about their crawlers.

A great example of a strategic pivot was Netflix going from a Spotify strategy (the most convenient way to consume all the content you love) to an HBO strategy (the best source of unique & original programming worth paying for).

This was a strategy pivot borne out of necessity because the content studios kept raising their prices. In fact, this pivot is why Netflix is profitable and Spotify is not.

This is why a strategy can’t simply be defining and chasing a metric.

There’s no way Elon Musk, 51 and out of shape, is going to fight Zuck who’s actively competing in Jiu-Jitsu competitions.

What’s amusing is that instead of just laughing it off or dismissing the discussion, he’s creating elaborate childish excuses for why he can’t fight.

It’s amazing how much of the Trump playbook he runs.

This is the least surprising headline I’ve read all year.

Every morning Linda Yaccarino shows up at work.

nostr:npub1dqwq7dhwnjj6ewxc84zynvjexa6t7wk6cts40558vcegvzx66qesc3t9qp Apple is not part of any tech bubble. They are trading at just under 10x revenue with $385B in revenue at a $3T valuation and $166B in profit.

If some recently VC funded unicorn had those metrics they’d be worth $10T.

Zoom sales team reading the email from their CEO asking everyone to return to office.

With Super Mario Bros and Barbie being the only movies to cross $1 billion at the box office this year, we should expect Hollywood to dig deep into the childhood nostalgia category in the coming years.

We already have adult-themed Barney and Polly Pocket movies in the works. The recent Transformers movie set up a reboot of the GI Joe movie franchise.

All we need is for Nintendo to announce big screen Legend of Zelda and Metroid movies to take this trend over the top.

There is lots of research that shows being surrounded by people that love and care about you causes you to live longer.

I’ve seen different versions of this over time touting the benefits of marriage, friends and now even playing with your grandkids as a source of longevity.

Smartphone sales plateauing took longer than I expected mostly due to COVID, but it’s here now. There’s as little need to have the latest model phone every year or two than there is to have the latest model car.

Apple has already weathered it better than most by creating a subscription ecosystem (TV, iCloud, Music) and accessory ecosystem (AirPods/Beats, Watch, etc) around their phones. So you still end up sending them cash regularly even if you don’t buy a new phone. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-08-06/apple-iphone-15-comes-amid-us-sales-slowdown-tim-cook-q3-earnings-comments-lkzfs14u

This is a great example of being both absolutely correct and incredibly annoying.

One of the key investors at Sequoia who drove the FTX deal is out.

I’m curious to see if there’s any sort of introspection at A16Z after being one of the noisiest boosters of multiple crypto pyramid schemes masquerading as startups.

I assume LPs don’t care since their deal flow will still be massive but hard to imagine trusting their judgement ever again.

I haven’t seen dedication to the content creation grind like this guy’s commitment to reviewing single malt whiskey while his girlfriend packs up her stuff amid a breakup with him.
