I don't know how QR codes work exactly, that will be my homework for tomorrow, but I'd imagine it would be possible to add data to their codes by introducing colors.

I could be totally wrong, but if the corner squares are meant to callibrate the dimensions of the qr itself, then having base/primary colors that the phone could callibrate to in order to pull additional data based on the hex codes of the colors would potentially open the door to 1mil x more data storage.

Tomorrow, I will discover my presuppilositions are totally wrong and this theory will be trashed.
