I often think about our historical context. The Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD, but it's interesting to note that, that year wasn't generally agreed upon until the late 18th century. Many rulers through the Middle Ages saw themselves as successors to the Roman throne (e.g. Charlemagne).
It's possible that historians may point to some period in the past as the fulcrum of collapse. So — we may already be living post empire from a historical context without knowing it.
