Imagine if we had a way to actually delete private keys? We could do that and have peer-to-peer payments without double-spends without using a blockchain and scale infinitely.
But of course to move Bitcoin to this new glorious system we would require a 2-way peg mechanism and no one is going to activate Drivechain, so we would never be able to use such a system.
Isn't that what mercury wallet does in a way?

Don’t know much about this wallet. By improving the ecosystem on a layer 2 is the pragmatic approach.
