Mediocre cooks are usually the people who end up cooks because they're not good at anything else.

Mediocre programmers usually end up programmers because hardly anyone else can program.

Theoretical physicists are the people who end up theoretical physicists because they can’t even be mediocre writers, teachers, cooks or programmers.
