It would be interesting to see additional stats about who these applicants are. For example, are these ethnic Armenians born abroad? Spouses of Armenians? Foreign residents, who moved to the country? People looking for a backup passport?

Interesting question!
According to the article, more than a quarter are refugees from Artsakh, otherwise probably stateless. Makes sense.
As a second passport, Armenian is ranked 64th, which is good but not great.
For Armenian diaspora, doesn't look like a great time to re-migrate economically or security-wise, to put it mildly, but maybe fair enough if they were in Syria or Lebanon...
