It’s easier to hide behind a collective than it is to fight for your independence. I struggle with this a lot when it comes to education in the Hispanic community, which has gone through a cultural shift toward anti American pessimism.

In my view the root of this struggle is the drug war that has lasted for 50 years and was effectively launched as a response to the civil rights movement. Sometimes the fight for freedom takes a wrong turn, but I can see where the justifications rest.
