Not everyone has a drivers license: elderly that no longer drives, poor that don’t have a car, people in metro areas that doesn’t make sense to own a car, etc.
There are state issued IDs but not a lot of people know about them or how to get one. Voting participation is pretty low to begin with so most people just say fuck it
You get your state issued ID from the same place you get a driver's license. Everyone knows this. It's a very small burden. It's not unreasonable to require people to prove in this very easy way that they actually live in the district that they're trying to vote in. I'm my state, you show ID, and if the address on your ID is an old address then you are required to provide a lease, utility bill or phone bill that shows your address. The only people that might have trouble with this are the homeless. I think the benefit of this policy in preventing voter fraud far outweighs any harm that it could potentially cause.
It's very clear the purpose of getting rid of a requirement to show ID to vote is to allow non citizens the ability to vote, which generally favors one side, which is why the side that it favors is always pushing for the removal of this "barrier"

I don’t care either way because I think voting is a scam but any added friction to vote seems like playing games.
Less than 40% of the US votes in presidential elections which is the high turnout. Fraud is not really a issue rather lack of participation

What’s wrong with a barrier to voting? The founding fathers only intended property owners to vote. I would modify that to say that only people with a positive net worth should be allowed to vote. When we give everyone the right to vote they vote themselves benefits at the cost to others. Do you like high taxes? Big government? Loss of freedom due to government interference? That’s what giving everyone the right to vote got you.
Of course they vote for their own interests. If you restrict the voting to only property owners or net worth levels then you will only get their interests.
It’s all philosophical anyway because voting was gamed a long time ago. All the different points of views, national priorities, and potential solutions for 350M people and somehow we boil those down to only two options? Red or blue.
The same two options that love to get the edges of their supporters geeked up over social politics and play the our side vs their side like a sports event. Yet what they pass into law is the taxes and interference while everyone is arguing about what they want you to argue about. Lack of choices is the same not having a choice.
